BATON ROUGE (AP) — Motorists who want to celebrate Louisiana State University’s latest college football national championship victory will be able to buy a specialized license plate commemorating the season.
State lawmakers authorized creation of a special LSU National Champions 2019 license plate that can be used on a vehicle in place of a regular state-issued plate. Gov. John Bel Edwards announced Tuesday he had signed the bill into law.
Anyone interested will be able to seek the new specialized license plate through the Office of Motor Vehicles. But first, the LSU Board of Supervisors must agree on a design.
The plate will cost $51 a year on top of regular fees, with the state keeping $1 for administrative costs and the remaining $50 going to LSU. The university must use the money for student scholarships.
The House and Senate unanimously passed the license plate bill during the regular legislative session that ended June 1. The measure originally was sponsored by Rep. Reggie Bagala, a Lafourche Parish Republican who died from the COVID-19 disease caused by the coronavirus.
