Nov. 22, 1942 – Oct. 18, 2023
MONTEREY – As the sun set on the 18th of October, 2023, so did Darrell’s time on earth.
Edward Darrell Frazier was born Nov. 22, 1942, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the eldest son of USMC Master Sergeant Edward Waddie Frazier and Ola Bernadine Pruitt Frazier.
Darrell passed away just shy of his 81st birthday in Ferriday, Louisiana. He was reunited with his father, his mother, and two younger brothers, Peter Jefferson Frazier and Steven Michael Frazier.
During his father’s service in the Marine Corps, the family lived at Parris Island, South Carolina. He returned to Camp Lejeune during his own military enlistment and service. Other than his military life, Darrell was a lifelong resident of New Era, Louisiana. He lived on the corner of JJ Pruitt Road, named for his grandfather, Mr. Jerome Pruitt, and Frazier Road, named for his own father.
After three years at Monterey High School, Darrell enlisted in the Marine Corps, later obtaining his high school diploma. He served in the USMC and Marine Corps Reserve for 10 years, then reenlisted in the Army National Guard and Army Reserve for another term of service, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He served as an Armored Amphibian Crewman with Detachment 1 Company D 528th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Heavy). During his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal with device.
Darrell was, above all, a patriot. He grew up a Marine drill sergeant’s son and became a Marine as soon as possible. He was proud of his father, brothers, and his own military service. After his honorable discharge, he returned to his home in New Era, where he worked in the oil fields and farmed.
He leaves behind a host of friends who will miss him dearly.
USMC Staff Sergeant Edward Darrell Frazier will be buried with military honors on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023, at New Era Baptist Church. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., with services at 1 p.m. Interment will immediately follow at the New Era Baptist Church Cemetery, under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home.
