FERRIDAY — Even though Ferriday High School’s varsity boys’ basketball team had three players score in double figures, other factors figured in the Trojans’ stunning 59-51 loss at home to the Block High School Bears last Tuesday night.

Marque Terrell led Ferriday with 19 points while Demarcus Mitchell finished with 13 points and Michael Kelly added 10 points. But as Trojans head coach Shawn Davis put it, their inexperience got the better of them against a veteran Block squad.

“We’re starting three freshmen and two sophomores. Youth kind of got us (Tuesday) night,” Davis said. “They have some juniors and maybe a couple of seniors. They’ve been together a few years now. We had 21 turnovers as well.

“Physically, they were much stronger and quicker (than we were). They’ve got a really good team. I think so.”

Block led Ferriday 22-19 at halftime and the Bears continued to keep the Trojans are arms’ length in the second half. The Bears were led by Kristan Osteen with a game-high 22 points and Korin Collins with 12 points.

Ferriday (2-3) took on Grant High School at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday in Day 1 of the Monterey High School Basketball Tournament. The Trojans then take on the tournament host Monterey Wolves at 8 p.m. Friday.

Efforts to reach Ferriday Lady Trojans head coach Lisa Abron for the final score and stats from their game last Tuesday night against the Block High School Lady Bears were unsuccessful.

The Lady Trojans took on Grant High School at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Monterey Tournament and then they go up against the tournament host Monterey Lady Wolves at 6:40 p.m. Friday.
