NATCHEZ — Grayson Gay led Cathedral High School’s varsity boys’ basketball team with 15 points as the Green Wave needed a big third quarter to defeat the upset-minded Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams 52-45 last Friday night.

Cam Tanner finished with 12 points and Justin Hawkins chipped in with 11 points for Cathedral, which found itself in perhaps a tougher-than-expected battle against WCCA at the Roy A. Garcia Memorial Gym on the Cathedral School campus.

The game was tied at 10-10 after one quarter and then WCCA outscored Cathedral 14-11 in the second quarter for a surprising 24-21 halftime. Remember, this is the same Rams team that gave Adams County Christian School all it could handle in the early stages of their home game with ACCS before the Rebels pulled away for the win just 24 hours earlier.

The Green Wave changed up its defense coming out of halftime which resulted in many turnovers and easy baskets for the home team. Cathedral ended up outscoring WCCA 24-5 in the game- and momentum-changing third quarter for a 45-29 advantage.

The Rams tried valiantly to rally in the fourth quarter, but their 16-7 edge over the Green Wave was not quite enough.

Cathedral (8-5) plays two games on the road later this week. First, the Green Wave travels to Centreville to take on the Centreville Academy Tigers at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Then they hit the road to Monroe, La. to take on the River Oaks School Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

NATCHEZ — Kinslee Young was a force on both ends of the court for the Cathedral High School Lady Wave last Friday night as she recorded yet another double-double in their 40-29 win over a good Wilkinson County Christian Academy Lady Rams team.

The victory was a milestone one for Lady Green Wave head coach Taylor Strahan as he picked up win No. 100 as a high school coach in four and a half years.

Young finished with 16 points to go with 23 rebounds as well as three steals. This after she had 19 points and 10 boards to go with four blocks to give her over 100 career blocks about 24 hours earlier in the Lady Green Wave’s 45-25 win over the Franklin Academy Lady Cougars at the Prairie View Academy Tournament in Bastrop, La.

A low-scoring first quarter ended with Cathedral in front 9-4. The Lady Green Wave’s defense made sure the Lady Rams took tough shots and also forced some turnovers throughout not only the first quarter, but the next two quarters as well.

Cathedral outscored WCCA 10-7 in the second quarter and 10-8 in the third quarter to give the home team a 29-19 lead. The Lady Green Wave then outscored the Lady Rams 11-10 in the fourth quarter for the 11-point win.

Marlie Hargon contributed with seven points and six rebounds while Emery Cate Lewis added six points, four rebounds, and three steals.

The Lady Green Wave improved to 9-4 overall. They play at Centreville Academy at 6 p.m. Thursday and then at River Oaks School in Monroe, La. at 6 p.m. Friday.
