NATCHEZ – Services for Berneda J. Cox, 97, of Natchez, MS, who died Wednesday, May 1, 2024, in Lafayette, LA, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Laird Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Russell Wagoner officiating.

Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Laird Funeral Home.

Berneda “Nita” James Cox, 97, passed away peacefully in Lafayette, LA, on Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Berneda was born on March 8, 1927, to Hugh James and Mabel Christiansen.

Berneda was married to John “Jack” William Cox Jr. for 56 years. They built a home in Kingston and would call Natchez, MS home.  She enjoyed gardening, and farming, and was a devoted member of Westside Baptist Church and later, Cliff Temple Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and loved her church family.

Berneda was preceded in death by her loving husband, John W, Cox Jr.; son, Hugh “Wade” Cox; mother, Mabel Christiansen; father, Hugh James, and siblings, Rufus James, Marguerite Lofton, Charles James, Horace Ray James, and Katherine Havis.

She is survived by her son, John W. Cox III and his wife, Kaye; granddaughter, Camille Renard and her husband, Nick; grandson, John W. Cox IV and his wife, Ashley; grandson, Jeffrey Cox and his wife, Jade; great-grandchildren, Sydney Renard, Olivia Renard, Cason Cox, Finley Cox, Wyatt Cox, Whitney Cox, and Griffin Cox. She also considered Thomas “Bit” Perry, a lifelong neighbor and cherished friend, an honorary grandson.

Pallbearers will be John W. Cox IV, Jeffrey Cox, Cason Cox, Wyatt Cox, Nick Renard, and Bit Perry.
