Prep boys: Vidalia wins big against Jena 51-19

JENA, La. — The Vidalia Vikings controlled the action in the second and third quarters on their way to a 51-19 win over the Jena Giants Tuesday night in an LHSAA District 3-3A game.

After holding Jena to a mere two points in the first quarter, Vidalia outscored the Giants 22-7 in the second quarter for a 31-9 halftime lead and then the Vikings outscored Jena 14-6 in the third quarter for a 45-15 lead.

Yet despite the lopsided victory, no one for Vidalia scored in double figures. The Vikings were led by Isiah Thompson with nine points and Dee Whitley with eight points. Vidalia (8-13, 1-2) hosts Avoyelles High School Friday night.

Hinds AHS 51, Cathedral 43

UTICA — Cathedral saw a four-point lead and an opportunity for a much-needed win slip away in the fourth quarter as the Hinds Agricultural High School Bulldogs rallied for an eight-point win over the Green Wave in MHSAA Region 7-1A action Tuesday night.

Cathedral led Hinds AHS 12-9 at the end of the first quarter and maintained its three-point lead at halftime. The Green Wave outscored the Bulldogs 9-8 in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs would not be denied as the outscored the Green Wave 20-8 in the fourth quarter.

Deandre Bolton led Hinds AHS with 11 points and Ladarrion Robinson had 10 points. Cathedral (11-10, 1-4) was led by D.J. Perry with a game-high 21 points and Jarrell Johnson with nine points. The Green Wave next plays at Bogue Chitto Friday night.

Block 65, Montgomery 61

MONTGOMERY, La. — Jahmal Macklin scored 19 points and Trevor Vault had 14 points as the Block Bears rallied in the second half to defeat the Montgomery Tigers in LHSAA District 4-1A action Tuesday night.

Block trailed Montgomery at halftime 25-24. But with four players scoring in double figures for the Bears, they outscored the Tigers in a high-scoring, back-and-forth third quarter 22-20 to take a 46-45 lead. The Bears then scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to 16 for the Tigers.

Ty Bell finished with 11 points and Dorian Bowman scored 10 points for Block (5-11, 2-0), which hosts St. Mary’s Friday night.

Tallulah Academy 43, Tensas Academy 22

ST. JOSEPH, La. — Led by Jake Busby and Todd Harrell, the Tallulah Academy Trojans rolled past the Tensas Academy Chiefs in an MAIS District 6-A game Tuesday night.

Busby led all scorers with 18 points and Harrell had nine points for Tallulah Academy, which jumped out to an 18-5 lead after one quarter of play and never looked back from there.

Rush Capdepon was the leading scorer for Tensas Academy with seven points and Jack Hart had five points. The Chiefs next play at Central Hinds Academy on Thursday night.

Silliman Institute 62, Centreville Academy 46

CENTREVILLE — Austin Gayle finished with 15 points and Riley Sones had 14 points as the Silliman Institute Wildcats defeated the Centreville Academy Tigers in MAIS District 6-AA play Tuesday night.

Silliman led Centreville by just five points, 28-23, at halftime before pulling away thanks in large part to an 18-9 advantage in the third quarter. Peyton Moody added 13 points for the Wildcats.

Centreville (5-14, 0-6) was led by Jake Darden’s game-high 17 points while Michael Keith and Chance Humphries had nine points apiece. The Tigers host Oak Forest Academy Friday night.

Columbia Academy 81, ACCS 39

COLUMBIA — Alex Price led Columbia Academy with 17 points and Kalin McKenzie chipped in with 13 points as the Cougars cruised past the Adams County Christian School Rebels in MAIS District 5-AA action Tuesday night.

The big quarter for Columbia Academy as far as scoring goes was the second quarter. The Cougars put up an astounding 32 points in that quarter to take a 48-21 lead over the Rebels into halftime.

Brandon Walker led ACCS (1-16, 0-3) with 15 points and Chris Guedon added 11 points. The Rebels host Brookhaven Academy Friday night.
