Mardi Gras fun brings cool week

Maybe the Miss-Lou will have a winter after all. We were beginning to think the season would skip us this year, but cool temperatures this weekend seemed to say it’s not spring yet.

It is, however, Mardi Gras season, and local events are in full swing. The area’s newest parade rolled Friday, thanks to the Krewe of Natchez Indians. But beads weren’t the only thing flying in the Miss-Lou last week. A bit of good news was in the air as well. Let’s review:

• Baylee Rose Graning has won a state essay contest for the Daughters of the American Revolution. Graning, a fifth-grade student at Cathedral, wrote about the War of 1812. She’ll now compete for the national title.

• The Natchez Trails Project was honored with the Community Economic Development Award from the Mississippi Economic Development Council for its role in attracting economic development to the area.

• Betty Washington Sago received the title of Woman of the Year, and her husband, Monroe Sago was named Man of the Year at the Natchez Business and Civic League’s annual banquet Friday night. The couple has led the charge in commemorating the Rhythm Night Club fire by opening a museum on the site of the tragic fire.

• At least 11 big dogs found new homes Saturday after a Natchez-Adams County Humane Society adoption day. These animals will truly reward their owners for the life-saving move, we know.

As we begin a new week, we know more exciting tidbits are going to come our way.
