MENDENHALL — The Trinity Episcopal boys basketball team overcame a scoreless second quarter with a 22-point outburst in the fourth quarter to advance to the semi-finals Wednesday night with a 46-40 win over Wayne Academy.

Trinity led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter but went cold in the second quarter and failed to score. The Saints second-period struggles allowed Wayne Academy to take an 18-15 halftime lead.

Trinity regrouped in the third quarter to cut the deficit to one point going into the final quarter.

Jake Winston and Tanner Cage led the way for the Saints with 11 points each.

Sky Logan scored eight points, Tip McKenzie had seven points and Trae McKenzie chipped in with six points for Trinity.

The Saints will face the winner of Thursday’s matchup between Central Private and Sylva-Bay at 6 p.m. Friday in the MAIS South-AA semi-finals.

WCCA boys 75, Franklin Academy 54

HAYNESVILLE, La. — The Wilkinson County Christian Academy boys basketball team had little trouble advancing to the semi-finals of the MAIS South-A Tournament Wednesday night.

The Rams were in control of the game from the get-go, as they jumped out to a 28-9 lead by the end of the first quarter.

WCCA continued to extend its lead throughout the contest and went into the fourth quarter with a 59-33 lead.

Dre Tolliver led all scorers with 25 points for the Rams. Ethan Curruth also reached double-digits for WCCA, as he finished with 12 points.

WCCA will face CENLA Academy at 6 p.m. Friday in the semi-finals

Tensas Academy 49

HAYNESVILLE, La. — The Tensas Academy boys basketball team saw its season come to an end Wednesday night with a 68-49 loss in the first round of the MAIS South-A Tournament.

The Chiefs struggled out of the gate and trailed by 17 points at halftime. CENLA continued to control the game in the third quarter and took a 57-30 lead into the fourth period before cruising to the 19-point victory.

Blaine Fletcher led Tensas Academy with 20 points, Farrel Keahey added 18 points and Rush Capdepon scored 11 points.

The loss ended Tensas Academy’s season.

CENLA Academy girls 50,

WCCA 46

HAYNESVILLE, La. — The Wilkinson County Christian Academy girls basketball team fell behind by nine points in the first three quarters of its first-round game in the MAIS South-A Tournament, but the Lady Rams would not go down without a fight.

WCCA was able to claw its way back into the game and cut the deficit down to four points before running out of steam and falling 50-46 to CENLA Academy.

CENLA led 10-5 at the end of the first period and 22-19 at halftime, but it was the third period where the Lions took control.

CENLA was able to outscored WCCA 17-11 in the third period to extend its lead to nine before WCCA made its run.

WCCA’s Terri Fisher led all scorers with 25 points in the game.

WCCA ends its season with a record of 6-17.

Claiborne Academy girls 51, Tensas Academy 7

Claiborne Academy was too much for the Tensas Academy girls basketball team to handle in their first-round matchup in the MAIS South-A Tournament Wednesday night.

Claiborne Academy dominated the first three quarters of play and took a 49-7 lead into the fourth quarter. Claiborne Academy added one basket in the fourth quarter to win the game 51-7.

Hali Matthews, Katy Irby and Madison Keyes each had two points for Tensas Academy.

The loss eliminated Tensas Academy from the tournament and ended the team’s season.
