NATCHEZ — Sometime in mid-March, the Adams County Road department will be back in a county-owned building.

The road department office will be relocated from its current address of 406 Liberty Road to 307 Market St., more commonly known as the sanitation and waterworks building.

The Adams County Board of Supervisors earlier this week approved moving the department into the offices formerly occupied by the Mississippi Center for Legal Services, which had been renting the space for $400 a month.

The road department has been renting the space at the Liberty Road location for $500 a month, County Administrator Joe Murray said. Prior to occupying that location, the department was housed at another Liberty Road building that had to be demolished when the Liberty Road traffic cloverleaf and bridge was built.

Murray said the move would save the county money and make things more efficient.

“There is no reason to be paying rent when we can move them into county-owned facility and have everybody in one place,” he said.

Supervisor’s President Darryl Grennell said moving the department is ideal for a number of reasons.

“It actually will put the road department down in the governmental complex area,” he said. “That way, requisitions and purchase orders can be handled much more effectively. A lot of times the (road department) administrative assistant has to drive downtown to bring paperwork.”

Likewise, under Adams County’s form of government, if a supervisor has a concern about the road department, they are required to address it directly to the road manager.

“It will be easier access for members of the board to communicate and deal with the road manager,” Grennell said.

“If a member of the board has a concern about something, we can just walk over there.”

Other offices located in the Market Street building include the district attorney’s office, the purchasing office and the sanitation department’s offices.
