NATCHEZ — The accountability plan prepared by the Natchez-Adams School District superintendent last month is a “work in progress” that needs continual attention, board members said Thursday.

Board member Harold Wayne Barnett said at the board’s monthly meeting he wants to see the plan become a five-year comprehensive plan.

“We have a lot of plans,” Barnett said. “But I think we need a comprehensive five year plan. Call it whatever you will, but we don’t need a plan over here and a plan over here and a plan over here, we need one comprehensive plan that is developed from input from staff, teachers and community leaders.”

Superintendent Anthony Morris reminded the board that the school district is currently operating under a five-year plan outlined approximately two and a half years ago when the district last received its required accreditation.

The board agreed to accept the current plan, but continue to make improvements to it.

In other business:

4 Board Member Benny Wright announced plans to erect a fallen scoreboard at Morgantown School using funds donated by United Mississippi Bank. The bank agreed to sponsor the project as long as their logo is added to the board. The board is seeking a needed contract from its attorney before progressing, but expressed gratitude for Wright’s efforts and UMB’s donation.

4Louis Jones of waste disposal company Preferred Transport approached the board requesting the district take bids for its garbage removal. Jones said, and the business manager confirmed, that the district has not taken bids on the work in at least 11 years. Waste Management holds the current contract, Jones said.

Jones said the board spent more than $98,000 in the last quarter of 2009 on trash removal.

4 Morris announced that the district raised $7,000 for the relief effort in Haiti. Natchez High Principal Cleveland Moore spearheaded the project.

4 Morris also acknowledged the teachers of the year for each school. The district teacher of the year was Shannon Doughty of Fallin Career and Technology Center.
