Lake Mary spillway may be worse than thought

MCCOMB (AP) — State fisheries chief Ron Garavelli says reports that the spillway at Lake Mary may be leaking on both ends has thrown a new wrench into a troublesome situation.

Officials knew that the Sam Field Spillway’s west side had blown out. But Garavelli said he got reports Friday that it’s giving way on the east side, too.

Earlier estimates were that a proposed patch job on the west side would cost $135,000. The state has only $80,000 available, from federal grants.

He told the Enterprise-Journal on Saturday that they won’t be able to assess damage to the weir until the Mississippi River falls.

The portion of the spillway previously known to be damaged sits in Adams County. The largest portion of the lake is in Wilkinson County.

Supervisors from both counties have acknowledged the need for help, but both said their counties don’t have the money to help.

One estimate puts a full rebuilding of the spillway at $2.5 million.

The spillway’s purpose is to regulate the lake’s low-water level and help retain the lake’s water, but that hasn’t been the case recently as the lake had lost much of its water before the Mississippi River began to rise.

The lake is a source of tax revenue for Wilkinson County since sportsmen and homeowners own property around its banks.
