WEEKEND TICKET: Film, Jamboree events keep hot weekend cool

NATCHEZ — If you are looking to beat the 90-plus degree weather this weekend, you have a few options to get indoors and have fun. Just be cautious of the slight chance of pop-up thunderstorms.

Hollywood Comes to Natchez

The Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration is hosting a free showing of parts of the television mini-series based on John Jakes’ book, “North and South: Part 1” at 4 p.m., in the Natchez Visitor Reception Center theater.

The showing is one of seven-part series of monthly screenings titled, “Hollywood Comes to Natchez: A Civil War Film” and is free to the public.

Copiah-Lincoln Community College instructor James Wiggins will lead a discussion following the film.

The series will lead up to the 24th annual Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration on Feb. 21-2. The theme is, “Fiction, Fact and Film: The Civil War’s Imprint on the Southern Culture.”

Big River Jamboree

Saturday evening, the Big River Jamboree kicks off at Shrine Hall in Morgantown with gospel music from 6 to 7 p.m. The Surefire Band and guests will take the stage beginning at 7 p.m., and finish up around 9:30 p.m.

Admission is $4 per person or $6 for couples.

EXPLORE!

Historic Jefferson College will give children ages 6 to 10 a chance learn about dinosaurs in a fun way with its EXPLORE! Dinosaurs.

The class begins at 10 a.m. and finishes at 11:30 a.m. Pre-registration is required, and there is a $10 fee. Contact Kay McNeil at kmcneil@mdah.state.ms.us or 601-442-2901 for more information.

Second Saturday

Organized by the Downtown Natchez Development Authority, on the second Saturday of each month, downtown stores open from 6 to 8 p.m. Along with bargain shopping, there is music, art events and refreshments.

The Rolland Golden Gallery will exhibit paintings, including pieces from Lake St. John and Lake Concordia. A reception will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Friday Forum

Jeff Mansell with the National Park Service and Trevor Brown with the Historic Natchez Foundation will speak at the Natchez Coffee Company from 8 to 9 a.m.

Friday Forum is a Natchez Chamber of Commerce event every Friday and is free to the public.
