Martin leads Cathedral to championship

Christopher Martin shot a 75 to help lead Cathedral High’s golf team to the District 3-2A championship, beating Newton by 11 strokes Monday at the Duncan Park golf course.

The district title is the fifth in a row for Cathedral.

&uot;We had won four in a row in 1A, so it’s now five in a row,&uot; said Cathedral golf coach Terry Moffett.

Cathedral finished with a team score of 330, while 2nd-place Newton had a 341.

Loyd Star, which won the District 3-2A title last year, finished a disappointing third with a team score of 347.

Martin’s 75 earned him Medalist honors and Loyd Star’s Trent Maddox shot a 76 for 2nd Medalist honors.

Wyler Murray shot an 82, Mark Carter an 85, Josh Ford an 88 and Tyler Crisp a 92 for Cathedral.

Josh Thoms and Brent McMillan each had an 80 for Newton, followed by Zack Thomas with a 90, Tommy Harthcock with a 91 and Steven Rowzee with a 93.

Jody Britt had a 79 for Loyd Star, followed by Trey Maddox’s 84, Kevin Smith with a 108 and Dylan Britt with a 116.

St. Andrews finished fourth with a team score of 379. Creighton Hardy led the way with an 85, followed by Alan Landrum with a 97, Nick Payne with a 98, Chase Bryan with a 99 and Todd Chatham with a 102.

Richland came in fifth with a 391. Zac Herring had an 88, Adam Cotten had a 97, Eric Stringer a 98, Brian Cooper a 108 and Chris Hearn a 121.

Morton finished in last place with a team score of 463. Brad Richen led the way with a 98, followed by Jason Goss with a 111, Richard Cain’s 121 and Jay Anthony with a 133.

Cathedral, Newton and Loyd Star’s Trent Maddox all advanced to the state championship, which will take place on May 9-10 at Forest Country Club in Forest.
