NATCHEZ — The Adams County Christian School girls basketball team used a dominant third quarter to pull away from Cathedral School Friday afternoon.

The Lady Rebels held just a five-point lead at halftime but outscored the Lady Wave 19-3 in the third quarter. ACCS capped the game off with a 14-6 advantage in the fourth quarter to win 52-23.

“I felt like our bench did a great job when they came in with defending and creating turnovers that led to open baskets,” ACCS head coach Melanie Hall said. “We picked up our intensity.”

It was those turnovers that cost the Lady Wave, head coach Randy Smith said.

“In the second half the things we talked about, like staying under control weren’t successful,” Smith said. “ACCS played really great basketball, and it worked well against us.”

The Lady Rebels had three players finish in double figures. Skylar Adams was the game’s leading scorer with 14 points. Nikki Worthey and Abby Givens each finished with 10 points for ACCS.

The Lady Rebels have dealt with injuries and a tough early-season schedule this year, but Hall said she is glad to see her girls continue to battle.

“These girls have been through a lot of adversity, and we are learning life lessons through the game of basketball,” Hall said.

ACCS (3-8) will host Oak Forest Friday. Cathedral (3-6) will travel to Wesson Tuesday.

ACCS boys 54, Cathedral 29

Brandon Walker’s 14 points and 14 rebounds led the ACCS boys’ basketball team to a convincing victory over Cathedral Saturday.

The Rebels dominated the opening half and jumped out to a 31-10 halftime lead before cruising to win.

“We were finishing,” ACCS head coach Richie Spears said. “We got the ball where we wanted and were finishing in the first half.”

Trey Fleming led ACCS with 16 points, and Lester Wells chipped in with 13 of his own.

Cathedral was unable to get anything going offensively Saturday, and head coach Peter Arnold said it was a bad day for his team.

“They outplayed us by a mile pure and simple,” Arnold said. “There is no other way to describe it.”

Jarell Johnson led Cathedral with 10 points. The Green Wave dropped to 4-5 on the season and will face Wesson Tuesday.

Spears said it was good for his team to have success and get a win. The Rebels (2-7) will play at Chamberlain-Hunt Tuesday.
