NATCHEZ — Carly Delaney’s field goal with 18 seconds left gave R.W. Delaney (ACCS) an 8-6 edge en route to capturing the AYA fifth- and sixth-grade girls championship Thursday night.

A free throw by Spear Electric’s (ACCS) Savannah Spear tied the game 6-6 earlier in the fourth quarter, but R.W. Delaney was able to prevent a final basket by Spear Electric to win it all.

“These girls played with a lot of heart, and the bottom line is, it wasn’t anything I did, it’s just these girls coming to play,” R.W. Delaney head coach Rudy Wilson said.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game, and they just did what they’ve been doing all year.”

R.W. Delaney got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter on a field goal by Kathryn Freeman. Spear Electric’s Shelby Mason tied the game with 1:22 to go before intermission.

Mason put her team ahead 5-2 with a field goal and a free throw with 2:11 to go in the third. R.W. Delaney began it’s comeback in the fourth, when Carly Delaney scored two buckets at the 2:21 and 1:28 mark. Spear tied the game 6-6 with a free throw with approximately a minute to play.

“They’re undefeated for a reason,” Spear Electric coach Leigh Ann Mason said. “We played hard and did everything we knew to do, and it came down to one last shot in the last minute. You can’t ask for much more than that.”

“I just knew it was going to be another hard-fought game,” Natchez Ford head coach Kemp Hairston said. “These guys beat us in the second game of the year. We tried to get into a transition game with them, and that’s not us. We just had to slow it down and use our two big guys.”

Tal Redhead scored six points for WCCA, and Brady Smith tallied four points. Thomas Vannoy chipped in with two points.

“We played well, we just came out on the short end,” WCCA head coach John Redhead said.
