WOODVILLE — Samantha Netterville was excited to find out Monday she had won $10,000 from the Louisiana Lottery.

So imagine the emotions when the Woodville native found she had actually won $1 million.

“I was nervous because I had just won $1 million and didn’t know what to do,” Netterville said, laughing. “I was so excited.”

Netterville, 29, said she’s been playing the lottery for nearly two years and purchases a ticket once a week in hopes of winning the top prize.

Normally, Netterville said she picks her own numbers for the Powerball, but decided to let the machine pick Sunday when she purchased a ticket at the State Line Food Mart in St. Francisville, La.

Nettervile works for Entergy Nuclear at the River Bend station in St. Francisville and said she often stops to buy tickets on her way to and from work.

“I just pick random numbers most of the time,” Netterville said. “The machine did good this time, though.”

Netterville stopped at a gas station on the way to St. Francisville Monday and got some good news from the clerk behind the counter.

“I had been holding the ticket all day joking saying I was going to win,” she said. “I went in to check, and they told me it was a hit, and I needed to go down to Baton Rouge.”

An initial call to the Louisiana Lottery office resulted in someone telling Netterville she had won $10,000 with the winning ticket.

“I said, ‘Well that’s good,’ and was excited,” she said. “Then they called me back and said it was actually $1 million, and I said, ‘Well, that’s even better.’”

The news came as such a shock to Netterville that she forgot to bring her driver’s license, Social Security card and other identification to the Baton Rouge office.

“I didn’t realize I had forgotten all that stuff, so we had to turn around and drive all the way back to Woodville,” Netterville said, laughing. “They gave me a big check for $1 million when I got back.”

The winnings, which actually totaled approximately $700,000 after taxes, was deposited in her bank account that same afternoon, and Netterville said she’ll be spending her winnings wisely.

“I’ve already set up bank accounts for my kids, and I plan on giving back to the church and community,” Netterville said. “I’m going to continue living the life I’ve been living — working, driving my regular car and everything.

“There are no big things I want to do except pay off some of my bills and save the rest in the bank.”

Neterville’s winning ticket matched all five white-ball numbers but missed the red Powerball number. Lottery officials said nobody won the top jackpots in the multistate Powerball and Louisiana Lottery drawings on Saturday.
