NATCHEZ — A familiar face will greet Adams County Christian School Friday night when it travels to Amite School Center.

Former ACCS head football coach Paul Hayles will lead ASC Friday when the two teams square off in a key district game.

“He’s a headmaster and head coach like me, and that doesn’t happen every day,” ACCS head coach David King pointed out.

King said his team would have to avoid a letdown after a big 70-48 win against Glenbrook School last Friday for homecoming. His Rebels (6-1, 1-0) cannot afford to overlook ASC (2-5, 0-1).

“Both of us are fighting for the playoffs, and they’ve always been a physical team,” King said. “We’re on the road coming off an emotional win, so we have to be mature enough to handle these situations.”

A lot of things went right for the Rebels offensively last week, and King said he thinks the players are finally getting comfortable with the direction of the coaching staff.

“I think the main thing is that the weeks together with this team and the preparation has finally paid off,” King said. “I think the kids are starting to get comfortable with the plays. Our skill players played well, and our offensive line gave us time. Overall, it felt like we were on the same page. We played four quarters of good offense.”

And his team didn’t have much of a choice, King said, since Glenbrook was also putting up points.

“People aren’t used to me scoring 70, but we had to, because they were capable of scoring at any time,” King said.

Which leads to King’s one gripe about the game — the defense giving up that many points.

“Coach (Richy) Spears and I did some soul searching,” King said. “We have to get the players comfortable in our defensive scheme. We have some very aggressive kids, and they get out of place because of their aggression. We have to keep working on it.”

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday at ASC.
