NATCHEZ — Dean Brown did his best to overtake Pete Powell on the back nine Sunday afternoon at the 2013 Natchez Senior Men’s Golf Championship at Duncan Park, only to come up a little bit short.

Brown shot a tournament record 8-under-par 63 to finish with a two-day total of 135. It was more than good enough to win the Senior (50-59) Division. However, it was two shots back of Powell, the overall champion.

“I made a few birdies,” Brown said. “I just tried to make up some ground on Pete. I had a few chances and made a few putts. But Pete was too strong today. He’s a great player.”

A few birdies? How about nine birdies on the day, six of them on the back nine. He had one bogey in his round. Dean said he enjoyed playing with Powell, older brother Doug Brown and Bubba Bruce.

“That’s pretty well to win the (Senior) division, but not the overall (title),” Dean said.

Powell was just as consistent on Sunday as he was on Saturday — except for, once again, the putter. He had seven birdies and three bogeys for a round of 4-under-par 67 to finish with a two-day score of 133 to win both the overall championship and Super Senior (60-69) Division.

“I hit it good, but continued to fight the putter a little bit,” Powell said. “It was fun watching (Dean). He hit a lot of good shots and putted extremely well. I had a six-shot lead with two holes to go. I hit a driver trying to go for birdie (on 17) and stymied next to a tree. I bogeyed that hole. Then I three-putted from 12 feet for bogey on 18. He birdied both holes.”

Third place overall went to Senior Division first-round leader Bubba Bruce, who struggled to a round of 73 for a two-day score of 142. He wound up second in that division.

Cornelius Lewis won the Legends (70-plus) Division over Joe Brumfield in a sudden-death playoff. Lewis shot a final-round 76 to finish at 152 while Brumfield had a 75 to come in at 152. Lewis had a bogey on No. 1, the first playoff hole, while Brumfield double-bogeyed the hole.

“My round was up and down,” Brumfield said. “The front side was really good. On the back nine, up until 16, I played really good. I bogeyed 16 and 17 and parred 18. I enjoyed playing with Joe. I was lucky enough and blessed to repeat from last year.”
