Centreville to fight for MAIS finals without Haygood

Centreville — The Centreville Academy Tigers are just one win away from the MAIS Class AA state championship game.

Next to step on to Tiger territory will be Glenbrook High School. Glenbrook upset Adams County Christian School in Round 2 of the playoffs last week.

Centreville assistant coach Brian Stutzman said his players are fired up about their chance to make it to the championship game.

“This is the biggest game of the year so far, so we’re just excited about the opportunity,” Stutzman said. “The energy in practice has been good, we’re just excited.”

Glenbrook will try to double up on their upsets against Centreville, and the Tigers will have their work cut out for them for several reasons.

“We’ll have to play the best that we’ve played on defense all year,” Stutzman said. “They have a very good quarterback (in Regan Edwards) and great wide receivers. We just have to find a way to slow them down.”

Edwards put up big numbers for Glenbrook last week with 345 passing yards completing 25 of 35 passes for four touchdowns. He also rushed for a touchdown and got Glenbrook out of many tight spots on third and fourth down conversions.

Though the Tigers must prepare to take on a tough offense, they have some tweaking to do on offense as well.

Junior quarterback Casey Haygood is out with an injury, after throwing for 138 yards last week. Stutzman said he is depending on two quarterbacks, Britt Netterville and Jordan Clark.

“They’re both team players, and they’re both good leaders,” Stutzman said. “They’re willing to step up and take on the challenge.”

The Tigers will host Glenbrook at 7 p.m. today.
