WINONA — The Adams County Christian School Rebels put Friday’s loss behind them as they beat Brookhaven Academy 54-37 in the MAIS Class AA State Tournament Consolation Game.

Saturday was the fourth meeting between the Rebels and the Cougars, and Rebel head coach Richy Spears said his players came ready to play.

“The defense picked it up, and we really got after them,” Spears said. “We got some transition baskets. We executed, we made stops and we were able to capitalize on it.”

Trey Fleming led the Rebels with 12 points, while Chris Guedon added nine points.

Lester Wells, Jay Fleming and Brandon Brooks each scored eight points as well.

The score stayed close in the first quarter as the Rebels led just 7-6, but they were able to pick up the momentum to outscore the Cougars 20-14 in the second quarter and 16-10 in the third quarter to lead 43-30.

The Rebels were able to keep their distance and not allow a late-game comeback as they won 54-37.

The Rebels will play in the MAIS Overall Tournament against the winner of the Magnolia Heights Academy and Jackson Prep Academy game this week.

Trinity Episcopal 80, Claiborne 37

LEARNED — The Trinity Episcopal School Saints got back to their usual high-scoring winning ways in an 80-37 win against Claiborne Academy Saturday in the MAIS Class A State Tournament Consolation Game.

The game extended Trinity’s season as the top three teams from each class compete in the MAIS Overall Tournament this week.

The Saints (25-2) had four players score in double figures with Michael Whitley leading the way with 23 points. Tommy McCoy had 20 points while Arzell McCoy and Wyatt Boothe scored 18 and 16 points, respectively.

Whitley hit three three-pointers, and Boothe accounted for two beyond the arch for a Saints team that struggled from the field all season.

It looked like another close game in the first quarter as Trinity led by four points against the Rebels, 16-12.

But the Saints broke away in the second quarter with a big 30-point quarter while only allowing six points to go into halftime ahead 46-18.

The third quarter blew the Rebels away with a 25-5 run that gave the Saints a 71-23 lead.

Head coach Edwin White rested his starters in the fourth quarter to only score nine points and take the 80-37 win.

The Saints will play in the Overall Tournament this week at a time that has yet to be determined.
