MONTICELLO — In a seesaw battle between Franklin County High School and Cathedral High School, the Green Wave scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 5-4 win over the Bulldogs Monday morning at the Lawrence County Tournament.

Franklin County scored one run in the top of the first and second innings before Cathedral took its first lead of the game after scoring three runs in the bottom of the second. The Green Wave added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 4-2 lead.

After starting pitcher Thomas Garrity worked five strong innings, Sam Parker came in and the Bulldogs scored two runs off him in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game 4-4. But Parker responded by not a allowing a single run in the top of the seventh and he would end up the winning pitcher after the Green Wave plated the winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

Garrity allowed two runs and struck out six batters. Pate Shirley hit a home run, Jacob Jenkins had a double and Craig Bradley went 2-for-3 to lead Cathedral at the plate.

Ethan Verduin took the loss despite allowing just one run while striking out three batters in two and one-third innings of relief. Bryce White got the start for Franklin County and gave up four runs and struck out six in four innings.

Franklin County (4-2) has two games Thursday at the Lawrence County Tournament, first against South Pike at 10 a.m. and then against tournament host Lawrence County at 4:45 p.m.

Cathedral 9, South Pike 5

MONTICELLO — After allowing five runs over a three-inning stretch, Cathedral scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to rally for a 9-5 win over the South Pike High School Eagles Monday afternoon at the Lawrence County Tournament.

Cathedral jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before South Pike struck for three runs in the top of the second inning, one run in the top of the third and one more run in the top of the fourth for what should have been an insurmountable 5-2 lead.

Especially after the Green Wave was held scoreless in the bottom of half of those same three innings. However, the Eagles’ defense fell apart in the bottom of the fifth and the Green Wave took advantage in taking a 9-5 lead.

Gabe Smith was the winning pitcher as he struck out one batter and walked one batter. Even though Cathedral had just four hits in the game, it was aided by five South Pike errors. Ty Brown went 2-for-4 for the Green Wave.

Cathedral (4-1) next plays against West Lincoln at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lawrence County Tournament.

Buckeye 14, Block 1

BUCKEYE, La. — Blake Buller pitched a complete-game three-hitter and Logan Phillips went 2-for-4 with a home run as the Buckeye High School Panthers defeated the Block High School Bears 14-1 in five innings Monday afternoon.

After giving up one run in the top of first inning, Buller pitched four straight scoreless innings. He also struck out four batters and walked none. He got plenty of help from his teammates at the plate.

Buckeye took the lead for good with a five-run rally in the bottom of the second inning to make it a 6-1 game. Jordan Fuqua had the big hit of that frame with a two-run double. The Panthers then scored five more runs in the bottom of the third, which was highlighted by Phillips’ two-run home run.

The Panthers put the mercy rule in effect after plating three runs in the bottom of the fourth and Block was unable to keep the game going after the top of the fifth. Jacob Fannin was charged with the loss after giving up nine runs, only four of them earned, on four hits and one walk with two strikeouts in two innings.

Block (0-3) next plays at the Harrisonburg Tournament against host Harrisonburg at 4 p.m. Thursday.
