Saints get ‘uncomfortable’ win

NATCHEZ — Trinity Episcopal athletes are used to playing intense games, hard-fought games and high-stakes games.

But none of those words described the Saints’ game against Briarfield Academy Friday night. In fact, the best adjective to use for the Saints’ 73-17 win is “uncomfortable.”

Briarfield was down to five players after three players decided not to show up for the bus ride to Natchez. To add insult to injury, the Rebels’ Kyle Miles was benched for an extended period after exchanging heated words with Trinity’s Kent King and drawing a technical foul.

All of this left Briarfield with just four players on the court during the second quarter.

“This is the most uncomfortable feeling in the world,” Trinity head coach David King said. “They’re great people at Briarfield, and this was just a no-win situation. There’s no right way to finish a game like that.”

Briarfield started the game with a 4-2 lead in the opening minute, but Trinity then scored 21 unanswered points to give the Saints a 24-4 lead after the first quarter.

Miles drew the technical at the 1:13 mark in the first quarter, and didn’t return to the game until the third quarter. Meanwhile, Trinity’s bench took advantage of a depleted Rebels team, scoring 23 points in the second quarter while limiting Briarfield to two free throws.

Trinity called off the dogs early in the third quarter and let the backups finish the game. The Saints scored 18 points in the third quarter and just four in the fourth.

L.J. Trimble led Trinity in scoring with 12 points. Brothers Tip and Trae McKenzie both tallied 11 points for the Saints.

Trinity (6-2, 3-0) will host Centreville today.

The Lady Saints also had little trouble with an overmatched Briarfield team Friday night.

Madelyn Cross and Bethany Ogden continued to dominate for Trinity. Cross finished with 18 points, and Ogden had 17 points. Murphy Aldridge also scored in double figures for the Lady Saints, tallying 12 points.

Lady Saints head coach Richy Spears said he was pleased with the intensity from his entire roster.

“Great intensity from all 12 girls was there tonight, and it hasn’t been up to this point,” Spears said. “Everyone who played tonight played hard.

“I feel like the newer girls are getting more used to the system. I’m getting used to them, and they’re getting used to me.”

Trinity (10-3, 2-0) will take on Centreville today.
