Natchez’s Pete switches QBs before jamboree

NATCHEZ — The quarterback position for Natchez High School has been similar to a two-man game of musical chairs.

Senior Sidney Davis and freshman Chris Scott have unseated one another at the quarterback position for most of the summer.

The next round of musical chairs will take place in Hazelhurst High School’s jamboree at 6:30 p.m. tonight in a contest against Hazelhurst. Once again, the moving competitors are Davis and Scott. After moving Davis back to his natural position at wide receiver in early August, head coach Melvin Pete decided it would be best to have a veteran taking snaps. A week later, Pete changed his mind

“We’re going with Chris,” said about tonight’s starting quarterback. “The situation really is, we know Sidney has a chance to play at receiver in college, and we want him to be in position where he can get more film out there. He’s going to have to play the position he’s best at.”

Scott, who practiced as the quarterback in the spring and for most of the summer, is capable of leading the team, Pete said. However, Pete is worried about putting the freshman in a high-pressure situation at such a young age.

“We’re trying to grow him up fast, and that’s the only thing I’m worried about,” Pete said. “That’s really the reason I wanted to keep Sidney there first. I don’t want Chris to get down on himself early in his high school career.”

Pete is still trying to complete his depth chart since taking over the team in July

“It’s a lot like coaching an all-star game,” Pete said. “You know you have talent in an all-star game, and we’re just trying to figure out where they are.”
