RAYMOND — Adams County Christian Academy fell 9-2 against Central Hinds Academy, while Trinity Episcopal Day School defeated Central Private 11-9.

Kelli Ficken came on in relief of a struggling Madison Frazier and kept ACCS off the scoreboard in the final five innings as the Central Hinds Lady Cougars rallied for a 9-2 win over the Lady Rebels Monday afternoon in the MAIS District 5-AA opener for ACCS.

Ficken scattered seven hits and struck out two with no walks to pick up the win. Frazier, who started the game for Central Hinds, gave up two runs on six hits and struck out just one in her two innings of work.

ACCS scored one run in each of the first two innings to grab a 2-1 lead and they held that lead until the lead got away from the Lady Rebels in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. The Lady Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth and then took advantage of too many miscues in the field by the Lady Rebels to bring in five runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 9-2 lead.

“We had several errors that opened the floodgates that allowed them to score several runs in that one inning,” ACCS head coach Forrest Foster said. “From there, it was all downhill.”

Brooke Runnels pitched all six innings and allowed nine runs on 10 hits, three walks and two hit batters. The defense behind her ended up committing six errors. Taylor Lay and Tori Traxler both went 2-for-4 to lead Central Hinds at the plate.

Despite the loss, there were a few bright spots. Senior Brooke Allen went 4-for-4 with a double and fellow senior Kylie Powell was 3-for-3. The rest of the team had a combined six hits.

“Brooke Allen and Kylie Powell gave us some good senior leadership today,” Foster said. “That’s something we’ve been without this year is senior leadership. Hopefully, the rest of the team will follow suit.”

ACCS (7-6, 0-1) plays host to Amite School Center 7 p.m. today.

Trinity Episcopal 11,

Central Private 9

BAKER, La. — The Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints needed a four-run rally in the top of the fifth inning to escape with an 11-9 win over the Central Private School Lady Rebels Monday afternoon.

Talk about a unique pitching line for both winning pitcher Kailey Hutchins and Michaela Hutchins. Kailey Hutchins ended up pitching all five innings and allowed no runs on three hits and two walks with just one strikeout. Michaela Hutchins pitched to eight batters in relief of Kailey Hutchins and gave up all nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on five hits and walks — without recording an out.

Head coach Miranda Smith had no choice but to bring Kailey back in for Michaela to get out of the jam, and Kailey did just that.

“We had one bad inning. My pitchers struggled that inning,” Smith said. We walked too many batters. We gave up too many hits.”

And that one bad inning erased a 7-0 Trinity Episcopal lead and the potential to run-rule Central Private. The Lady Saints scored four runs in the top of the first inning, two in the top of the second and one in the top of the fourth.

“Other than that one inning, I was proud of them,” Smith said. “We played solid defense. We hit the ball very well. We had a few base-running errors we need to work on.

“And I’m very proud they came back and won that game. They never gave up.”

Tali Beard went 3-for-4 with a double, Kayla Gilmore was 3-for-4, and Hannah Fitt was 2-for-3 with a double to lead Trinity’s 16-hit attack.

Trinity Episcopal (5-6) plays host to Central Private today at 5:15 p.m. at the Concordia Recreation District 3 Complex in the back end of this home-and-home series.

Tallulah Academy 3, WCCA 1

TALLULAH, La. — Tallulah Academy scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the first inning and held on for a 3-1 win over the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Lady Rams in MAIS District 7-A action Monday afternoon.

Mary Kathryn Doucet was charged with the loss despite a solid performance on the mound, which included four strikeouts.

But it was the defense that let her down in Silliman’s half of the first inning after WCCA jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

“We walked the leadoff hitter and we made two errors in the bottom of the first inning,” Lady Rams head coach Jessie Toney said.

One of those errors brought in the first run for Tallulah Academy and a base hit drove in the next two runs. Unfortunately for the Lady Rams, they could take advantage of the opportunities they had to get back in the game.

“We left runners on base in four of the six innings we got to play. Our biggest downfall was we had eight strikeouts,” Toney said.

“We had several scoring opportunities. We just couldn’t make it happen. We had just three hits.”

Despite the loss that dropped WCCA to 0-7 overall and 0-2 in district play, Toney said he was pleased with the effort of the team from the second inning on.

“This was by far our best game,” Toney said. “After the first inning, we made the defensive plays. They’re improving. They’re playing hard and they’re playing better.”

But it does not get any easier for WCCA as it plays host to Class AA powerhouse Silliman Institute at 5:30 p.m. today.
