New movie slated to film in Natchez

NATCHEZ — Natchez has been selected for filming in what has been described as an “ultra-low budget” horror film.

Though officials are still keeping mum about many details of the project — including its title — Natchez Convention and Visitor’s Bureau public relations spokeswoman Jessica Cauthen said the film with a $600,000 to $800,000 budget will be directed by Padraig Reynolds.

Reynolds has directed one feature-length film, “Rites of Spring.”

A 2014 film, “Worry Dolls,” is listed as being in pre-production under Reynolds’ directorial credits on the International Movie Database. The movie has no synopsis listed on IMDB.

Cauthen said the movie has plans to shoot scenes in an old hospital in Meadville, and has looked at Margaret Martin Performing Arts Center — which was featured in Tate Taylor’s “Get on Up” — and the Natchez Senior Citizen’s Center.

“We were competing with Canton, but they said they like our location, our people and they said we did an excellent job of finding what they were looking for,” Cauthen said.

CVB Interim Director Creda Stewart said filming would happen during the fall. The production crew shot some B-roll when doing location scouting earlier this year, she said.

“We have a city that is made for movies,” she said. “Movie producers don’t have to build a lot of sets, they don’t have to reinvent the wheel, and that is a great compliment. It is a city that is in use all the time by our own people, but when they come by they go, ‘Holy cow, it is already done.’”

Natchez Mayor Butch Brown said the city will offer the movie crew a production office similar to how it did with Taylor’s film.

“This is not a big-budget film like, “Get on Up,’ but all the little ones add up, too,” he said.

Cauthen said the film production crew would not likely need to cast extras in the area.

An independent, historical zombie horror film, “Rise Again,” was filmed in Natchez in 2012.

“Rise Again” is currently listed on IMDB as being in post-production with a release date of Nov. 2.
