Big challenge awaits Wave

NATCHEZ — Cathedral will face another test of strength Friday when they take on a larger St. Joseph team.

St. Joseph is an MHSAA 2A school that upset Lake High School 20-6 in the season opener. As a 1A school, Cathedral head coach Ron Rushing is hoping his team can step up against a bigger team.

“There’s no doubt they’re a larger school than St. Aloysius,” said Rushing, whose Green Wave defeated St. Aloysius 42-31 Friday. “They will create size problems, so we’ll have to be more balanced.”

Rushing said he will likely have to pass it more than he did against St. Aloysius, as Wyatt Boothe attempted seven passes in the win. The Green Wave rushed for 412 yards though, and Rushing doubts Cathedral will rely on the run as heavily against the larger St. Joseph.

“We’re looking at different ways to get creative,” Rushing said. “We’re moving Jardarius (Anderson) around and we’ll have Quinton Logan at different positions.”

Boothe rushed for 101 yards Friday, and Rushing expects that his mobile quarterback will open up the passing game Friday night.

“If they try and sneak that safety up to stop Boothe from tucking it and running it, it’s only going to open up our pass even more,” Rushing said.

Cathedral will play at St. Joseph at 7 p.m. Friday.
