NATCHEZ — Just a few weeks ago, Trinity Episcopal Day School was trying to figure out where to go sitting at 0-2. Now, the Saints (5-2) are on a five-game winning streak heading into the final weeks of the season, and head coach Zach Rogel is happy with what he has seen from his team, especially the progression of an underclassmen heavy roster.

“At the beginning of the year, it was the blind leading the blind,” Rogel said. “We didn’t have any upperclassmen to show us the way. We had to figure it out ourselves, but we’ve been improving.”

The Saints will hit the road Friday and travel to River Oaks (4-3) for another tough matchup.

“It is going to be a tough task,” Rogel said. “We played them in a scrimmage to start the year, and after watching film, they are a really impressive team. They have 28 kids and 15 are seniors. You can see them getting better every week.”

The Saints are coming off a 30-28 district-clinching win against Wilkinson County Christian, while the Mustangs enter the game off a 28-7 win against Central Hinds Academy.

Rogel said he believes his team needed the tight game last week.

“We got the job done, but I think reality set in that we aren’t where we need to be,” he said. “The two previous weeks we had a running clock in the second half, so we had to go four quarters last week. WCCA came out and punched us in the mouth, but I think we needed it.”

Trinity and River Oaks are scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Monroe.
