centreville— The Centreville Academy Tigers proved why many are saying they will be a force to be reckoned with in MAIS Class AA Friday as they cruised past Trinity Episcopal Day School, 13-1.

After surrendering a run in the top of the first, the Tigers posted 10 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, and were able to add onto that lead with the game eventually being called in the bottom of the fourth inning.

“We had our timing down at the plate,” Centreville head coach Jason Horne said. “And we had some younger guys step up pitching. We used a new pitcher every inning and were also able to get some reserve guys in the ball game.”

Trinity (0-3), came into the game with little experience under their belt, and head coach Elliot Meng knew his team was up against a tough opponent.

“We know we have tough competition,” Meng said. “We expect Centreville to be one of the best in AA.”

But despite taking a big loss, Meng isn’t looking at things in a negative light.

“Our fielding was much better tonight,” he said. “And we cut down on the errors, we are improving with that.”

Kevontaye Caston took the loss on the mound for Trinity, and Cade Wells was the only Saint with an extra base hit.

Centreville’s Chase Hughes, Tyler Caston and Dillon Ivey all recorded doubles, while Casey Haygood belted two.

Jordan Clark also recorded a triple for Centreville.

Horne said he is challenging his team to continue to play at a high level, especially with the challenges ahead.

“I just told the guys that we’ve got district starting next week and we’ll be seeing a lot better pitching and playing,” he said. “We have to be ready.”

For Meng, he is just hoping to get Trinity out on the field and log some quality practice time, which is something the Saints haven’t had much of because of the weather.

“It is tough because we have to come together as a team,” Meng said. “You do that by practicing. We need to be getting out on the field and gelling.”

Next up for Trinity is a clash with Tensas Academy, while Centreville will gear up for Bens Ford.
