FERRIDAY — Services for Sylvester Griggs, 88, of Ferriday, who died Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at his residence, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at New Morning Star Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny Lewis officiating.3:26 SylvesterGriggs obitpic

Burial will follow at the Natchez National Cemetery under the direction of Concordia Funeral Home in Ferriday.

Visitation will be at 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Griggs was born Dec. 9, 1926, in Frogmore, the son of James P. and Janie Harbor Griggs.

He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran.

Mr. Griggs was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia Griggs; two sons, Sylvester Griggs Jr. and Clyde Griggs; two brothers, Willie Cooks and Eddie Cooks; and one sister, Beatrice Gage Carr.

Survivors include six sons, Russell Griggs and wife, Linda, of Galveston, Texas, Larry Griggs and wife, Gladys, of LaMarque, Texas, Kenneth Griggs of Atlanta, Michael Griggs and wife, Rose, of Texas City, Texas, David Griggs and wife, Sandra, of Reseda, Calif., and Kerry Griggs of Las Vegas; six daughters, Barbara Whitfield and husband, George, of Marana, Ariz., Regina Griggs of Covington, La., Lorie Griggs of Granada Hills, Calif., Sherry Griggs Miller of Mission Hills, Calif., Holly Watson and husband, James, of Long Beach, Calif., and Jennifer White and husband, Robert, of Cleveland, Ohio; one sister, Theresa Williams of Dallas; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
