An event set for Saturday at the Greater Mount Bethel Baptist Church in Stanton sounds like it could garner the support of everyone over the age of 50 in the Natchez area.

Pastor Johnny Elery and others at his church and the Natchez community have put together a program aimed at instilling some common sense — or sense, period — in our young people.

Complaints about teenagers and early adults today run the gamut and cross all racial and cultural boundaries. Rarely does a day go by that we don’t hear (or wonder ourselves) about how the younger generation will make it in a world very different from the one in which most of us grew up.

Many children today grow up in homes with only single parents. Children are exposed to adult concepts at an age younger than ever before. It shows in a variety of ways that leave many of us shaking our head.

The 2015 Youth Explosion, as Elery and his partners are calling it, seeks to expose Adams County young people to lessons and resources on the importance of handling their finances properly and beginning to save money early; on knowing their rights when confronted by law enforcement; on improving their communication skills; on proper dress decorum; and on respect and what that means.

The event begins with registration from 8:30 to 9 a.m. at the church, 14 Parkway Drive, Stanton. If you know a young person who would benefit from counseling in these areas, think about accompanying them to the conference.

At the very least, say a prayer in support of the efforts of those putting the event together. If it reaches even a handful of our young people, we are all the better for it.
