vidalia — The Vidalia All-Stars are heading to the Little League World Series.

Elizabeth Smith tossed a complete game and Vidalia scored four early runs to down East Texas 4-1 to win the regional tournament Thursday and advance to the World Series.

“There is no explanation for the way I feel,” Vidalia head coach Wesley McCarver said. “I’ve been (to the World Series) with my daughter as a fan in 2012, but to be on this side of the fence is so much different. I’m proud of all my girls.”

Vidalia scored three runs in the first inning on an RBI single from Laken Hood and a two-run single from Anna McDaniel. Those three runs proved to be all the team needed with Smith on the mound.

“It was a great pitching performance by Elizabeth today,” McCarver said. “We knew we had to get some runs on the board and have pitchers hit their spots. When that happened, we got ahead, and when these girls get ahead, they are tough.”

Smith’s dominant performance wasn’t a solo effort, however, as her team came up with multiple defensive plays throughout the game.

“I knew if I just put it in there, they would back me up,” said Smith of her teammates.

McCarver also acknowledged the teamwork shown in the game.

“These girls have been together for a long time and they back each other up,” he said. “Mentally, they call their own timeouts and talk to each other. They know the game and know what to do when they need to.”

Vidalia pushed the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Smith.

East Texas’ only run came in the seventh on an RBI double from Katie Jackson.

McCarver said he is proud of his whole team in every aspect of the game.

“I’ve got 12 girls, and all of them didn’t get to see the field (Thursday) night or in all the games, but they smiled and really supported the team,” McCarver said.

Now, Vidalia will pack up and head to Sussex County Delaware where the World Series is played.

“We’ll more than likely be leaving Saturday morning and we’ll have to play on Sunday,” McCarver said.
