NATCHEZ — The Cathedral Green Wave have found a home.

Friday morning, Cathedral found out they would be a member of MAIS District 4-AAA. Other members of the district include Adams County Christian School, Brookhaven Academy, Simpson Academy and Columbia Academy.

“I’m excited about it,” Cathedral head football coach Ron Rushing said. “Looking ahead to the future, we are really excited to know what league we are playing in. It’s going to be competitive from top to bottom.”

Rushing said he expects to have a set schedule Monday.

For Adams County Christian School, which is right across town from Cathedral and finished as the runner up in MAIS AA last season, the addition of the Green Wave is something that will only make the season tougher.

“We’ve got a brutal district to begin with, and when you throw in a defending state champion, it gets even tougher,” ACCS head football coach David King said.

King, who scheduled three MAIS AAAA opponents for next season, said despite the scheduling shake up to accommodate Cathedral, he expects his bigger games to stay intact.

“I have all the confidence in the world the association will be fair,” King said. “They are going to do it as fair as they can, and the chips will fall as they may. Somebody gives me a schedule, district and league, and it is my job to go out there and do the rest.”

As for the looming matchup between ACCS and Cathedral, Rushing said it will be one of the toughest games of the season.

“David is a dear friend of mine and we go back a long time,” he said. “From that standpoint, I’m not very excited about having to paly a good friend. I learned a lot from him when I was over there. We’ll get through the week and go on with the season.”

Football wasn’t the only sport impacted, though. For Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell, the past few days have been a scramble.

“Softball has already started and that was my biggest concern,” Blackwell said. “But the coaches that I’ve talked to have been nice and accommodating and have helped with working out schedules.”

Blackwell said he has locked down around 15 games for the Lady Wave thus far.

“We’ll probably get in one or two more tournaments,” he said. “Our first game is August 11 at home against Brookhaven Academy.”
