NATCHEZ — Natchez High running back Tydarrius Terrell put his team on his back en route to a 44-27 district win against Wingfield.

Terrell finished the game with 27 carries for 200 yards and a touchdown.

“It was nice to see,” Natchez High offensive coordinator Roderick Holmes said. “We’ve been trying to get our running game going for the past few weeks so it was good to see him break out. We did a lot of damage on the ground.”

Terrell’s performance took the pressure off quarterback Chris Scott, who only had to throw the ball 10 times in the game. He completed five of his passes for 100 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

“Chris looked good,” Holmes said. “We didn’t have to do a lot through the air and we had a few plays that were called back that were big.”

Scott was also a threat on the ground, running for 49 yards on seven carries and he added another two touchdowns.

Malik Byrd and Jaylin Pollard had the touchdown catches for Natchez, 32 and 30 yards, respectively.

Despite allowing 27 points, the Bulldog defense stepped up big in the game. Natchez recorded five interceptions in the contest, including one that was returned for a touchdown by Ernest Woods.

Shavoke Herrington, Dalvion Jackson, Desmond Dawson and Tommy Wells recorded the other interceptions.

“We had a few blown assignments, but overall they made it happen when they were supposed to,” Holmes said.

Herrington led the way defensively with eight tackles. Keenan Johnson added seven tackles, two sacks and three tackles for loss, one of which was a safety.

The win pushes the Bulldogs’ record to 3-2 in district and Holmes said it is nice to be on the positive side of things this late in the season.

“It feels good to get a district win, but we have to go on the road next week,” he said. “We have to have a better week of practice and have consistent good days of practice to be ready to play a team that may not have a chance to go to the playoffs. They have nothing to lose.”

The Bulldogs will be traveling to play West Jones next week.
