NATCHEZ — Two people accidentally drove cars into light poles on Sunday, Natchez Police Department Capt. Tom McGehee said.

McGehee said both one-vehicle accidents occurred in areas where car accidents rarely occur.

The first car, a Chevrolet Impala, hit a light post on Martin Luther King Jr. Street near Woodlawn at 5 a.m.

The second car, a Nissan SUV, hit a light post on North Union Street near Elm Street at 9 p.m..

McGehee said it was unusual for the NPD to respond to two single-vehicle accidents involving light posts. It was even more unusual two accidents of the same variety occurred within two blocks and in the same day, he said.

Both drivers reportedly hit a pole when they swerved to avoid hitting oncoming traffic.

The car on Martin Luther King Jr. Street reportedly swerved right, and the car on North Union Street reportedly swerved left.

MeGehee said police are not attempting to connect the incidents.

“It’s nothing but a coincidence,” MeGehee said.
