Ferriday guard plays through adversity

FERRIDAY — Lost in the last-second heroics of Ferriday guard Chanta Poole’s game-winner against Sterlington Friday was the performance of fellow guard T’Keyah Fletcher.

And it’s not a surprise Fletcher might be getting overlooked, since it seems to have been that way all season.

Fletcher led Ferriday in scoring with 14 points to help the Lady Trojans improve to 3-2 in district play. Head coach Lisa Abron said Fletcher’s quiet demeanor sometimes makes teams not take her as seriously as they should.

“She’s not very vocal on the court, so a lot of people don’t give her respect when she’s in the game,” Abron said.

“She’s been starting for me for three years, and has a huge responsibility playing two-guard with Poole, our star, so she gets overlooked.”

But Abron isn’t overlooking the value of having Fletcher on her team, especially given what she’s had to play through.

“She’s stepped up tremendously for us,” Abron said. “She’s been through a lot of adversity, having lost her bother in a tragic car accident over the Christmas break, so she’s playing with a lot of emotion. She’s helping us out a lot.”

With the win against Sterlington, Ferriday moves into the No. 2 spot in their district. But your record isn’t the most important thing this time of the year, Abron said.

“Power points are what matter right now, but we need as many wins as we can get,” Abron said. “We have a tough battle with Lake Providence ahead of us to see if we can go even further.”

ACCS Lady Rebels

The Adams County Christian girls may have lost a tough game against Centreville Academy Monday night, but the future for the Lady Rebels still looks bright.

And that’s both the immediate future and long-term future.

The Lady Rebels have a chance to make some noise in the MAIS District 5-AA tournament at ACCS this week. Meanwhile, the ACCS junior varsity girls wrapped up their season winning the 5-AA junior varsity tournament last week.

The ACCS junior varsity girls defeated Central Private 44-20 Friday to win their district tournament. Tory Laird led the Lady Rebels with 15 points, and Kaitlyn Pace and Maggie Ray each had eight points.

The junior varsity girls finished their season 18-1. The varsity girls are currently 17-4.
