NATCHEZ — Adams County Christian School girls basketball coach Melanie Hall has preached unity to her squad all season long.

Her message paid off Monday night.

Seven separate Lady Rebels poured in points as ACCS earned a hard-fought 63-57 win over cross-town rival Trinity Episcopal Day School.

“I’m proud of my girls,” Hall said. “We haven’t changed what we’re all about —play hard, smart and play together, and when we’re doing that, we’re having fun … It’s about the little things … To God be the glory.”

Brianna Henson led the Lady Rebels with 23 points off the bench. Ashleigh Williams added 10 points.

“(Henson’s) a spark, but she will be quick to tell you, it’s all about the team,” Hall said. “And that’s what all of my girls are all about. And of course at different times, different ones step up, but it’s a total team effort.”

Not to be outdone, Trinity’s D’Asia Mitchell notched a game-high 26 points.

“When she is on fire, she is just something to watch,” Trinity coach Faye Minor said. “She’s going to have a lot of scouts going after her … She’s a joy to watch when she’s got it going.”

The junior forward showcased her offensive prowess in the second half, scoring 19 points and connected on five 3-point makes for the game.

“She made some really tough shots,” Hall said of Mitchell. “We had our hands in her face. It wasn’t like she was 20-plus feet out and we were way back. We were right in her face, and she nailed it.”

ACCS (18-6) seized control of the game midway through the second quarter after a 15-6 spurt lifted the Lady Rebels to a 30-19 halftime lead.

“We just executed the fundamentals together,” Hall said. “We talked about it before the game, it’s all about the details.”

Trinity (15-5) managed to claw its way back into the game in the third with a 25-17 scoring edge, cutting the deficit to 47-44.

“We’re a 3-point shooting team,” Minor said. “You live by the 3 and you die by the 3 … I give all the credit to ACCS, but my girls just really didn’t have a good game.”

The Lady Saints, however, were unable to get any closer than the three-point deficit for the rest of the game.

Jasmine Ivory finished with 16 points for the Trinity.

The Lady Saints will travel today to Wilkinson County Christian Academy, while ACCS travels to Columbia Academy.

“We’re going to bounce back,” Minor said. “We’ll go to the drawing board and get back to our shooting game.”

ACCS (boys) 47, Trinity 30

ACCS utilized a 20-5 spurt bridged between the third and fourth quarters to pull away from Trinity, notching a 47-30 win in boys basketball action.

“I just thought we kept them from getting into the lane,” ACCS coach Richy Spears said. “But the main thing we did was we rebounded the basketball better than the first half. We limited them to one shot, and offensively we were able to get some good looks and knock down some shots.”

The Rebels (13-6) were led by Devin Spear, who poured in a game-high 23 points.

“(Spear) and Brody (Cole ), those are my two returning starters from last year,” Spears said. “We knew we were going to lean on them, but Brody is out (with a shoulder) … (Spear) has played for me for four years and is helping the young guys, and Brody also from the bench.”

Trinity led at the end of the first 11-8 but went into a rut offensively from that point forward.

“We were not running our offense, which made us shoot low-percentage shots,” Trinity coach Chris Bunio said. “We ended up shooting overall 15 percent as a team and 8 percent from the 3-point line. Our shooting killed it us, and it was because we weren’t running our offense the way we should have.”

While the Saints struggled to find their shot, the Rebels (13-6) attacked the basket as only two of their field-goal makes came from 3.

“It’s been a grind all season long,” Spears said. “We’ve had injuries, we’ve had sickness, and I haven’t had my whole team not once this year. But they just keep grinding and plugging away, and we did a good job (Monday).”

Kevontaye Clayton had 14 points to lead Trinity (8-5), and David Jackson chipped in with 13.

“The good thing is it wasn’t a district game,” Bunio said. “Games like this can definitely humble you. I think they’ll take this as a positive as we head into (today’s game against WCCA) and for the rest of the year.
