CLINTON, La. — It was a close game with big implications for the MAIS District 5-AA title championship between the Adams County Christian varsity girls and Silliman Institute Friday.

But thanks to a more than three-to-one advantage in free throw attempts, Silliman rallied from a very slow start to defeat ACCS 46-44 to remain in the hunt for that top seed.

“They shot 35 free throws. We shot 11. That was pretty much it,” Lady Rebels head coach Melanie Hall said. “We were both aggressive. We just didn’t get the luxury of shooting as many free throws as they did.”

ACCS got off to a good start and led Silliman 10-3 at the end of the first quarter. But in the second quarter, the Lady Wildcats’ aggressive style allowed them to get to the free-throw line and that’s when the momentum changed in favor of the home team.

Silliman ended up outscoring ACCS 16-8 to take a 19-18 lead at halftime. The Lady Wildcats managed to keep their one-point lead as both teams scored nine points in the third quarter and then outscored the Lady Rebels 18-17 in the fourth quarter.

Kayla Davidson led a balanced scoring attack for Silliman with 11 points and Bradleigh Brignac chipped in with 10 points.

ACCS (15-4, 5-1) was led by Brandis White with a game-high 22 points and Taylor Welch scored eight points. The Lady Rebels play host to Wilkinson County Christian Academy next Tuesday.

Lake Providence 57, Ferriday 47

FERRIDAY — After a solid first quarter, the Ferriday Lady Trojans went ice cold from the field in the second quarter and that proved to be the difference in their 10-point loss to the Lake Providence Lady Panthers Friday night.

Ferriday led Lake Providence 15-13 at the end of the first quarter of this District 2-2A contest. But in the second quarter, Ferriday managed to score just five points and trailed by seven points at halftime.

“The second quarter we came out kind of flat,” Lady Trojans head coach Lisa Abron said. “I’ve got a couple of people who are sick. Chante (Poole)’s one of them. They got kinda winded. Probably what hurt us was cold shooting.”

The Lady Trojans started in their man-to-man defense, but because that kind of defense took a lot of energy out of some of those players, Abron had to make some adjustments.

Even though Poole was not 100 percent, she still led Ferriday (7-12, 0-2) with a game-high 28 points. Keatrice Brown added 11 points.

The Lady Trojans will try again for their first win in district play next Tuesday at Mangham.

Cathedral 46, St. Aloysius 37

VICKSBURG — After both teams struggled from the field in the first half, Cathedral turned to its defense in the third quarter and that was a key factor as the Lady Green Wave defeated rival St. Aloysius in Region 7-1A action Friday.

Cathedral trailed its longtime rival 8-4 after one quarter of play and still trailed by four points at halftime. In the third quarter, the Lady Green Wave forced the Lady Flashes into several turnovers which in turn led to easy baskets.

The Lady Green Wave outscored the Lady Flashes 17-4 in the third quarter for a 29-20 lead. St. Aloysius did score 17 points in the fourth quarter, but so did Cathedral (5-10, 2-2).

Ana Perry scored 12 of her 15 points in the second half — five in the third quarter and seven in the fourth. Epiphany Jackson finished with 10 points while Ginny Daggett scored most of her nine points in the fourth quarter.

Cathedral travels to Woodville today to take on WCCA.

Wilkinson County 81, Tylertown 40

WOODVILLE — Tyesha Harris and Lineasia Palmer scored 24 points apiece as the Wilkinson County Lady Wildcats used a big second quarter to open up a close game on their way to a blowout win over the Tylertown Lady Chiefs Friday night in a Region 7-3A game.

Wilkinson County got off a slow start in the early goings of the first quarter and only led 13-9 at the end of the quarter. But then the Lady Wildcats took over in the second quarter on both ends of the court, outscoring Tylertown 20-6 for a commanding 33-15 lead at the half.

Wilkinson County (8-12, 4-2) has a key region game on the road against Franklin County Tuesday night.

Franklin County 54, Amite County 39

MEADVILLE — For one of the few times this season, the Franklin County Lady Dawgs trailed at the end of the first quarter.

That didn’t last long, however, as No. 2 Franklin County rallied to defeat the Amite County Lady Trojans in Region 7-3A action to remain undefeated.

Franklin County trailed Amite County 11-10 after one quarter of play, but responded with a 19-12 advantage in the second quarter for a 29-23 lead at halftime and the Lady Dawgs continued to pull away in the second half.

Kierra Collins led Franklin County (15-0, 4-0) with 13 points while Vintrice Briggs and Jessica Jackson added 11 points apiece. The Lady Dawgs host Wilkinson County Tuedsay.

Trinity Episcopal 40, Oak Forest 31

AMITE, La. — Madelyn Cross led all scorers with 17 points and Bethany Ogden added 14 points to lead the Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints past the Oak Forest Lady Yellow Jackets Friday night.

Trinity Episcopal (15-7) hosts Bowling Green School today.

Monterey 57, Harrisonburg 18

MONTEREY — Monterey’s Ellen Bairnsfather came within three points of tying the amount of points Harrisonburg scored as a team for the entire game in leading the Lady Wolves to an easy win over the Lady Bulldogs in District 6-B action Friday night.

Bairnsfather finished with 15 points to lead Monterey, which improved to 19-1 overall and 2-0 in district play. The game was so one-sided that head coach Cary Shivley went to his bench early.
