NATCHEZ — Students interested in learning about the environment in a fun atmosphere are in luck.

The deadline is nearing for applications for Adams County students wanting to attend the Warren A. Hood Natural Resources Youth Camp, and any students interested in attending need to turn in their applications fast.

Each year, the Adams County Soil and Water Conservation District sponsors two students’ attendance to the camp, which is June 5 through 9 at Hinds Community College in Raymond.

Students in grades 9 through 12 are eligible to apply for the camp, and the application deadline is set for April 11.

SWCD District Coordinator Pat Williams said the cost of tuition, travel, room and board for the two students who are selected is covered by the district.

Williams said the camp is a great way for students to learn about natural resources.

“The camp is designed to make learning about conserving our natural resources fun, as well as educational,” she said. “Students will be exposed to all aspects of soil and water conservation including, cropland, grassland, woodland and wildlife.”

Williams said students learn about these aspects in a variety of ways.

“(Students) can use hands-on activities conducted by local and state resource professionals, field trips and planned recreation,” she said.

Williams said students will be given opportunities to check water and soil supplies, study crops and learn about wildlife.

Students who attend the camp will also be eligible for a scholarship, Williams said.

“The scholarship is only awarded to one student at the entire camp, and there are 82 counties represented,” she said. “The counselors at the camp award the scholarship to the student who has an outstanding interest and aptitude for natural resources.”

Williams said it is important for the younger generation to learn about conserving our natural resources.

“Everyone needs to get with the program on learning how to conserve our water and soil supplies,” she said.

“It’s a very important part of our lives.”

Williams said applications are available at the SWCD office at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Service Center in Natchez.
