OLLA, La. — The Block High School softball team clinched the Division 3-1A title Thursday night with a 3-1 win over LaSalle.

“We had a good, strong pitching performance from Kayla Smith, and we didn’t make an error in the game and, we got a couple of timely hits.” Block head coach Robert Swayze said. “Good defense won the game for us.”

Kayla Smith pitched the whole game for the Lady Bears, who finish the season with a 16-8 record and a 7-1 record in the division, Swayze said.

Swayze is unsure of who his team will face in the first round of the postseason, he said.

MONTEREY 11, OAK HILL 3

Monterey fell behind 2-0 against Oak Hill Thursday night, and it took a while for the Lady Wolves offense to wake up. But once they did Monterey was able to cruise to an 11-3 win.

“(This was) a very big win for us,” Monterey coach Hazel Brallier said. “(Oak Hill) has been ranked number one, or number two (all year).”

The loss was Oak Hill’s first in District 6-B play, and Monterey will finish second to them in the district, Brallier said.

Ellen Bairnsfather pitched a complete game for the Lady Wolves. She gave up eight hits and struck out one batter. She also helped herself out at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double.

Monterey was down 2-0 in the fourth inning when they exploded for five runs. Paige Bryan had a big double in the inning and, she would finish the game 3-for-4 with two doubles.

Monterey was able to get some bunts down to get the offense going, and the team showed a lot of focus to be able to come from behind, Brallier said.

The Lady Wolves tacked on four runs, all scored with two outs, in the fifth inning and two more runs in the sixth.

Monterey’s Ashley Wilson and Bailey New both went 2-for-4 in the game

The win puts Monterey at 19-5 on the season and 7-2 in the district. They will play Avoyelles Charter School at home Monday.
