VIDALIA — The corner of U.S. 84 and Nichols Drive in Vidalia saw two separate accidents on Friday that sent five people to the hospital.

According to reports from the Vidalia Police Department, the first accident involved a 2008 Chevrolet truck rear ending a Concordia Parish school bus transporting children Friday morning before school.

The truck hit the back of the bus while the bus was stopped in the turning lane at the corner of U.S. 84 and Nichols Drive.

The VPD reported that no one on the bus received any injuries, but the passenger in the truck was taken to Natchez Regional Medical Center and treated for minor injuries.

According to the VPD, the bus went on with its scheduled route after the incident.

Concordia Parish School Board Superintendent Loretta Blankenstein said she was glad to see no serious injuries were reported.

“We were blessed that it was the type of situation that it was,” she said. “We are thankful that no children were hurt.”

The VPD also reported that the second accident occurred at approximately 2 p.m and involved four vehicles.

According to reports, a Lincoln was trying to turn onto U.S. 84 from Nichols Drive when it was struck from behind by a dark black or blue vehicle.

The Lincoln spun out of control and then struck a Chevrolet Envoy that was headed east on U.S. 84.

The Envoy then spun into another vehicle that was on Nichols Drive heading north facing the high school.

Two elderly couples were taken from the scene by ambulance to Riverland Medical Center in Ferriday where they were in critical condition Friday.

The driver of the dark vehicle that reportedly caused the four-car accident fled the scene after the incident, and VPD officers were searching for the driver.

The VPD reported that the vehicle is either dark black or blue in color and is possibly an SUV. Reports also indicate that the vehicle is most likely severely damaged due to the accident.

Anyone who spots the vehicle or has any information regarding the accident is asked to contact the VPD at 318-336-5254.
