Cathedral High School is set to face possibly its biggest test of the season tonight when it hosts Simpson Academy, and Green Wave coach Chuck Darbonne said his team is sticking to the books.

“The main focus is to play our responsibilities. We can’t get selfish,” he said. “They are a (MAIS Class) AAAA school, and they have a tradition over there. I’m sure they are hungry for a win.”

Cathedral (4-0) heads into tonight after a strong performance last week in its win over Amite School Center, 49-14.

Darbonne said after no penalties, no punts and just two turnovers on downs, it was one of the most overall effective offenses he has seen from his team this season.

“We played well,” he said. “We threw the ball well especially. We have used (running back) Greg (Moore) early this year, but we have been working on our passing game. It was balanced, and I think it will make us hard to stop going forward.”

Simpson (1-3) has suffered its losses this season from MAIS powerhouses Parklane Academy, Oak Forest Academy and Presbyterian Christian, and Darbonne said it shows a lot about the Cougars’ strength.

“They are battle-tested, so I’m sure they are looking for something to prove,” he said. “They are a big physical team that runs really well. They have some speed and attack the ball on defense. We have to be disciplined.”

While the Green Wave is hoping to keep its win streak alive, Friday’s game will offer an additional sentiment for Cathedral supporters.

Former Green Wave coach Ken Beesley is scheduled to be honored during halftime as the school’s football field will be named after him.

All former players and students of Beesley are invited to midfield during the ceremony.

“Since they found out, it’s definitely given our kids a different perspective as to what’s being played for,” Darbonne said. “He has spent over half his life at Cathedral and is still contributing to this school. He’s still a staple around here and doing what he can to keep this place running. It’s just a huge accomplishment for him and his family.”’

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and a ceremony for Beesley will follow in the field house after the game.
