With less than a minute to go, McDonald Collision and Rural Rapid Response were locked in a tie ball game Saturday afternoon. That was until Chris Sewell broke free, dashing past defenders with a jolt of lightning.

Sewell found the end zone on a 35-yard run with just three seconds remaining, notching the win for the McDonald Collision Saints, 27-20, in an 8-and-under Miss-Lou Youth Football game in Vidalia.

“It was too close of a game, but they played well,” Saints coach Josh McDonald said. “Our speed saved us. We had the speed and had some good runs around the bend.”

The Saints’ quick scoring was what kept them running throughout the game.

After Chris Pernell intercepted the Saints on their first offensive snap, Rural Rapid Response Bulldogs’ Derrion Wilson scored the first touchdown of the game on a 17-yard run 15 seconds before halftime.

But, Sewell came back with 35-yard rushing score as time expired in the second quarter. Mason Bouldin ran in the extra point to give the Saints a 7-6 lead at the half.

“It was a battle,” Bulldogs’ coach Lee Turner said. “We gave up too many big runs, but overall it was a good fight.”

Sewell ended the game rushing for three touchdowns, with his final score coming on a 60-yard run late in the third quarter. Bowlin also scored on a 70-yard run.

“It was a team effort and we used the clock to our advantage,” McDonald said. “It’s all heart for them for sure. They play hard every play.”

Wilson led the efforts for the Bulldogs, rushing for two touchdowns. Chris Pernell rushed for one touchdown and also caught a 2-point conversion from Caden McMinn.

“We had only scored one touchdown this year before this game. We have been struggling all year. We played our best game by far today, even though we fell a little bit short,” Turner said. “I’m super proud of our guys. This was really a great game for us.”
