Prep roundup: Vidalia falls, Sicily Island boys win in first round

BASILE, La. — The Vidalia High School Vikings could not keep up with the Ville Platte High School Bulldogs regardless of which gym the two teams played in Friday night.

In a game originally scheduled to be played at Ville Platte only to be relocated to Basile High School, Ville Platte easily defeated Vidalia 87-62 in the bi-district round of the 2018 LHSAA Class 2A Boys’ State Playoffs to end the Vikings’ season.

Jahmal Byers led the Bulldogs with a game-high 25 points and Tyran Jones chipped in with 15 points. DeMikal McCoy had a double-double for the Vikings with 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead them in both categories. Ray J. Ransom had 13 points and Zach Smith added 10 points.

No. 16 seed Ville Platte jumped out to a 24-13 lead on No. 17 seed Vidalia (12-14) after one quarter of play and maintained its 11-point lead at halftime. The Bulldogs iced the game with a 22-12 advantage in the third quarter for a commanding 66-45 lead.

Sicily Island 60, West St. John 49 (Class 1A Boys)

SICILY ISLAND — It took a scoring surge in the second quarter and outstanding defense in the third quarter for No. 9 seed Sicily Island High School to overcome a slow start as the Tigers took defeated the 24th-seeded West St. John Rams 60-49 Friday night in the bi-district round of the 2018 LHSAA Class 1A Boys’ State Playoffs.

Tyreke Tolliver led Sicily Island with 21 points while Xavier Bates added 13 points and Keonte Dunbar chipped in with 11 points. John Holmes led West St. John with 19 points.

The Tigers trailed the upset-minded Rams 14-10 after one quarter of play before going on a tear in the second quarter, outscoring West St. John 25-13 for a 35-27 halftime lead.

Then it was the defense’s time to shine in the third quarter as Sicily Island held the Rams to just four points while putting up 13 points itself for a 48-31 lead.

Sicily Island (15-15) plays host to No. 25 seed Ringgold at a time to be determined next Tuesday in the regional round. Ringgold upset No. 8 Oak Grove 74-46 Friday night.

Logansport 67, Delta Charter 48 (Class 1A Boys)

LOGANSPORT, La. — The No. 20 seed Delta Charter School Storm saw its season come to a close Friday night after losing to the No. 13 seed Logansport High School Tigers 67-48 in the bi-district round of the 2018 LHSAA Class 1A Boys’ State Playoffs.

No other information on this game was available. Delta Charter finished with an overall record of 10-24.

Hornbeck 64, Monterey 43 (Class B Boys)

HORNBECK, La. — Monterey High School saw its season also come to an end Friday night in the bi-district round of the 2018 LHSAA Class B Boys’ State Playoffs as the 24th-seeded Wolves fell to the ninth-seeded Hornbeck High School Hornets 64-43.

No other information on the game was available. Monterey finished with an overall record of 15-14.

Grand Lake 103, Block 47 (Class 1A Boys)

LAKE CHARLES, La. — The 28th-seeded Block High School Bears had their season come to an end Friday night as they lost to the fifth-seeded Grand Lake High School Hornets 103-47 in the bi-district round of the 2018 LHSAA Class 1A Boys’ State Playoffs.

No other information on this game was available. Block finished with an overall record  of 2-29.
