VIDALIA — Vidalia police are investigating a case of vandalism and theft that took place at Vidalia Junior High School, said Lt. Miranda Clifton, criminal investigator with the Vidalia Police Department.

Clifton said police responded to call at approximately 3 p.m. Sunday with a request from a resident who wanted to relinquish items that were found by his or her juvenile child.

Clifton said officers received a backpack, two iPads, two Chrome tablets and three chargers.

Clifton said the same officers later responded to a vandalism call at Vidalia Junior High School after Principal Christine Washington discovered a broken window at the school.

Clifton said officers discovered additional broken windows and doors and other vandalism. Upon reviewing the school’s security video, officers identified the person who committed the burglary and vandalism was the same juvenile who had returned the electronics and backpack, Clifton said.

Clifton said the juvenile was charged with theft, vandalism, and possession of a tobacco product by a minor, then released to his parents.

When school resumed on Monday, additional items were found to be missing or vandalized, Clifton said. The monetary amount of vandalism and thefts was undetermined and the investigation is ongoing, Clifton said.
