NATCHEZ — Gunshots were fired at approximately midnight Saturday following the All Black Party event at the Natchez Convention Center — an adult party that requires attendees to wear all black colored attire.

Natchez Police Department officials said a heavily intoxicated man sustained a non-life-threatening injury in a parking lot on the corner of Franklin and North Wall Streets after leaving the event.

Capt. Scott Frye of the Natchez Police Department said the victim was shot in his shoulder area by a woman he allegedly assaulted.

“We’re still investigating the event,” Frye said. “Deputies were there working off-duty for the event. … The shooting happened as they were leaving.”

Frye said the woman fired three shots, during which the man was hit at least once in his upper right shoulder and possibly grazed a second time.

The man was taken to Merit Health Natchez for treatment, Frye said.

Chief Walter Armstrong of the Natchez Police Department said the man was intoxicated when questioned.

“He was in a drunken stupor when the officers questioned him,” Armstrong said. “He was saying things like ‘Let’s go to the Bible study.’”

Frye said charges might be issued at a later date after further investigation of the incident.

Convention center manager Walter Tipton said the center was safe and secure when the incident occurred at least a block away after the All Black Party ended.

“When we do book large events such as this one, we require a large amount of security, and these folks had it,” Tipton said.
