Published 6:01 am Sunday, January 6, 2019

NATCHEZ — Tamia Stallings finished with a game-high 16 points and Silentianna Collins added 11 points as the Brookhaven High School Lady Panthers cruised to a 61-29 win over the Natchez High School Lady Bulldogs Friday night in the MHSAA Region 6-5A opener for both teams.

Brookhaven, one of the top teams in all of Class 5A, made it extremely difficult for Natchez High to run its offense throughout the game. The Lady Bulldogs only reached double-digit once, and that was the third quarter.

From the first quarter to the second, it went from bad to worse for the Lady Bulldogs, and that was a product of the Lady Panthers’ stifling defense. Brookhaven led Natchez High 14-8 after one quarter of play and then put the game completely out of reach with a 17-1 advantage in the second quarter for a 31-9 lead at intermission.

Both teams scored 11 points in the third quarter, but that didn’t help the Lady Bulldogs at all. The Lady Panthers resumed their dominance by outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 19-9 in the fourth quarter.

Ayanna McNairy poured in 10 points for the Lady Panthers (17-1, 1-0). Candi Gray led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points and Kelvonda Arbuthnot had six points.

Natchez High (8-9, 0-1) travels to Summit to take on North Pike High School on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m.

Vidalia boys 59, Beekman Charter 44

VIDALIA — Coming off a 34-point home loss to Rayville High School last Wednesday night, the Vidalia High School Vikings needed a win over Beekman Charter School for two reasons.

One, Vidalia could not afford to drop to 0-2 in LHSAA District 2-2A; two, the Vikings have a showdown with district and Concordia Parish rival Ferriday High School on the horizon.

With Jaquan Wilson and RayJay Ransom leading the way, the Vikings bounced back in a big way. But they weren’t able to put away the Tigers until the fourth quarter in a 59-44 victory Friday night.

While the first three quarters were closely contested, Vidalia was able to hold the edge on Beekman Charter in each one. The Vikings led the Tigers 14-10 after one quarter of play, 27-22 at halftime, and 41-35 by the end of the third quarter. They put some much-needed distance between themselves and the Tigers with an 18-9 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Wilson led the Vikings with a game-high 18 points and Ransom ended up with 15 points. Keith Haynes led the Tigers with 12 points and Daryl Seay added 10 points.

Vidalia (7-8, 1-1) plays at Ferriday on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Ferriday girls 59, General Trass 15

LAKE PROVIDENCE, La. — The Ferriday High School Lady Trojans had their way with General Trass High School through three quarters en route to a 59-15 win over the Lady Panthers Friday night in an LHSAA District 2-2A game.

Actually, it wasn’t much of a game at all. Instead, it was a complete mismatch. Ferriday dominated from the start and didn’t let up until the outcome was well in hand by the end of the third quarter.

The Lady Trojans jumped out to a 26-5 lead after one quarter of play and then shut out the Lady Panthers in the second quarter for a 45-5 halftime lead. The Lady Trojans outscored the Lady Panthers 10-2 in the third quarter for a 55-7 lead.

Zaniya Curry led the Lady Trojans with a game-high 19 points while Pacha Poole had nine points and Diamond Johnson contributed with eight points.

Ferriday (15-4, 2-1) hosts district and Concordia Parish rival Vidalia High School at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8.

Jefferson County girls 41, Collins 27

COLLINS — Having home-court advantage did not help the Collins High School Lady Tigers as they lost to the Jefferson County High School Tigers 41-27 Friday night at the Collins Tournament.

After getting off to a slow start and trailing 6-4 after one quarter of play, Jefferson County used a 14-3 advantage in the second quarter to take the momentum away from the host team and take an 18-9 lead into halftime. The ‘visiting’ Lady Tigers continued to add to their lead during the second half.

Brittany Goldsberry led Jefferson County with 15 points and Akira Doss added nine points. Collins was led by Raneisha Magee with 15 points.

Jefferson County (5-6) continues play at the Collins Tournament when it takes on Wayne County High School today at 10:30 a.m.

Copiah Academy girls 46, ACCS 44

GALLMAN — One bad quarter on both ends of the court kept the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels from what would have been their first win of the 2018-2019 season.

On a Friday night in which ACCS outscored Copiah Academy by a combined 10 points in the first, third and fourth quarters, it was the second quarter that hurt the Lady Rebels as they lost to the Lady Colonels 46-44.

The Lady Rebels led the Lady Colonels 8-7 after one quarter of play, but defensive lapses and poor shooting by ACCS allowed Copiah Academy to respond with a 19-7 advantage for a 26-15 halftime lead.

ACCS cut into that lead in the second half, but could not quite make enough stops and could not get enough shots and free throws to fall to get over the hump.

Danyel Weir led the Lady Rebels with a game-high 15 points and Shelby Mason had 12 points. Kaitlyn Newell made four 3-pointers and led the Lady Colonels with 12 points.

ACCS (0-12) plays at Brookhaven Academy on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m.

Block girls 64, Montgomery 34

JONESVILLE — Cintina Green led Block High School with a game-high 22 points and the Lady Bears outscored Montgomery High School 41-16 over a two-quarter stretch as they took care of the Lady Tigers 64-34 Friday night in LHSAA District 3-1A action.

ShirCold Bowman added 15 points and YaKetra Woods scored 10 points for the Lady Bears, who put up 19 points in the second quarter and 22 points in the third quarter while holding the Lady Tigers to five and 11 points, respectively. And that was after Block struggled offensively yet still led Montgomery 8-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Carlee Carter was the only player for the Lady Tigers to score in double figures as she finished with 14 points.

Block (16-4, 2-1) plays at Logansport High School on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m.

Copiah Academy boys 60, ACCS 40

GALLMAN — Dewey Shannon led Copiah Academy with a game-high 24 points as the Colonels defeated the Adams County Christian School Rebels 60-40 Friday night.

Copiah Academy got off to a good start and led ACCS 11-2 after one quarter of play. The Rebels, however, found their offensive rhythm in the second quarter as both teams scored 16 points to keep the Colonels’ lead at nine points, 27-18, at the half.

Unfortunately, the Rebels could not keep up with the Colonels in the third quarter, allowing 21 points while scoring only seven points themselves to go into the fourth quarter trailing 48-25.

Glaston Magee and Yohan Thompson led the Rebels in scoring with nine points apiece.

ACCS (1-9) hits the road to take on Brookhaven Academy on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
