Prep basketball round up: Delta Charter girls drop pivotal district game

FERRIDAY — After being held in check in the first half, Tensas High School senior Toya Bethel scored eight of her 11 points after halftime as the Lady Panthers rallied to defeat the Delta Charter School Lady Storm 41-34 Friday night in a pivotal LHSAA District 2-1A game for both teams.

“We had a game plan, which we executed in the first half — make Toya a jump shooter,” Lady Storm head coach Ronald Ellis said.

Ellis pointed to three things that hurt his team – missed lay-ups in the first quarter, too many missed shots in the second quarter, and turnovers in the second half.

The Lady Storm led the Lady Panthers 7-2 at the end of the first quarter and 22-14 at halftime. Yet the lead at the end of the first and second quarters could have been a lot larger than they were.

“The first quarter, we missed about five lay-ups. Easy lay-ups. And we missed too many shots in the second quarter,” Ellis said.

Then came the second half and that is when the Lady Panthers decided to change up their defense and force the Lady Storm into one turnover after another. And when that happened, the home team lost its focus and that frustrated Ellis.

“They gave Tensas some momentum. It went downhill from there. That’s been our big problem – not playing two halves of basketball. When they lose focus, they don’t block out, don’t play defense,” Ellis said. “One thing goes wrong, everything goes wrong. They made a run and we didn’t. If we don’t change that, we won’t get too far in the playoffs.”

The Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Storm 14-6 in the third quarter to tie the game at 28-28 and capped off the amazing comeback with a 13-6 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Caliyah Gibson added eight points for Tensas High (23-6, 7-3). Kierra Neal led the Lady Storm with a game-high 14 points and Shyvlie Blaney had 12 points.

Delta Charter (13-14, 6-4) plays at Ouachita Christian School on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m.

FERRIDAY — Thanks to a big third quarter, the Tensas High School Panthers rolled to an 84-37 win over the Delta Charter School Storm Friday night in an LHSAA District 2-1A game.

Tensas High (23-9, 8-1) led Delta Charter 40-25 at halftime before going on a tear in the third quarter. The Panthers scored 30 points while the Storm managed just five points. Even though their offensive production went down in the fourth quarter, the Panthers still outscored the Storm 14-7.

Kavarius Whitehead led the Storm with 12 points and Trace Miller added nine points.

Delta Charter (7-18, 3-7) travels to Monroe, La. to take on Ouachita Christian School at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29.

ACCS girls 51, Central Private 29

NATCHEZ — Shelby Mason led Adams County Christian School with a game-high 20 points as the host Lady Rebels remained undefeated in MAIS District 5-AAA with a 51-29 victory over the visiting Central Private School Lady Rebels Friday night.

Danyel Weir finished with 12 points and Geri Brumfield contributed with 10 points for ACCS, which outscored Central Private 20-7 in the second quarter to turn a close game into a blowout. At halftime, the host Lady Rebels led the visiting Lady Rebels 34-15.

Morgan Campbell led Central Private with 15 points – nearly half of the team’s offensive output.

ACCS (4-14, 4-0) plays at Silliman Institute on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m.

Central Private boys 58, ACCS 49 (OT)

NATCHEZ — Jace Pendarvis led Central Private School with a game-high 20 points as the visiting Rebels needed overtime to escape with a 58-49 win over the host Adams County Christian School Rebels Friday night in an MAIS District 5-AAA game.

After ACCS jumped out to what seemed to be a commanding 20-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, Central Private had other ideas. The visiting Rebels responded with a 15-6 advantage in the second quarter for a 27-26 halftime lead.

But the host Rebels answered by outscoring Central Private in a low-scoring third quarter 7-6 to tie the game at 33-33. ACCS had a chance to win the game in regulation, but it missed too many lay-ups in the fourth quarter and both teams scored 13 points to send the game into overtime.

Central Private once again took advantage of a cold-shooting ACCS team and outscored the hosts 12-3 in the extra session for the nine-point win.

Wes Stockstill ended up with 14 points and Austin Blanton had 12 points for ACCS.

ACCS (2-16, 1-3) next plays on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m. when it plays at Silliman Institute.

Silliman Institute girls 53, Cathedral 25

NATCHEZ — Cayley Pelt and Ashton Siebert led Silliman Institute with 12 points apiece as the Lady Wildcats used a big second quarter to defeat the Cathedral High School Lady Green Wave 53-25 Friday night in an MAIS District 5-AAA game.

Cathedral hung tough with Silliman in the first quarter and was only down 13-9 at the end of the quarter. But the Lady Wildcats turned up the defensive pressure in the second quarter and outscored the Lady Green Wave 16-6 to go into halftime with a 29-15 lead.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, Silliman put up more than twice as many points as Cathedral did in the second half — 24 to 10. Maddie Windham added eight points for the Lady Wildcats.

The Lady Green Wave was led by Baylee Graning with eight points and Mallory Hinson with six points.

Cathedral (5-17, 0-4) hits the road on Monday, Jan. 28 when it plays at Brookhaven Academy at 6 p.m.

Silliman Institute boys 50, Cathedral 41

NATCHEZ — Hunter Peterson had a game-high 16 points and Ben Lejeune added 15 points as the Silliman Institute Wildcats pulled away late for a 50-41 win over the Cathedral High School Green Wave Friday night in an MAIS District 5-AAA game.

The Green Wave led the Wildcats 15-14 after one quarter of play, but went cold from the field in the second quarter and trailed 21-20 at the half. Silliman outscored Cathedral 13-11 in the third quarter for a 34-31 lead.

But it was the fourth quarter that proved to be the difference as the Wildcats scored 16 points while holding the Green Wave to 10 points.

Chase Kaiser led the Green Wave with 11 points and J.C. Harris chipped in with 10 points.

Cathedral (6-16, 1-3) plays at Brookhaven Academy on Monday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m.

Ferriday girls 61, General Trass 17

FERRIDAY — Diamond Johnson and She’Kayla Miller led a balanced scoring attack for Ferriday High School with 10 points each as the Lady Trojans notched their 20th win of the season with a 61-17 win over the General Trass High School Lady Panthers Friday night in an LHSAA District 2-2A.

It did not take long for Ferriday to take control of this game on both ends of the court. General Trass, a longtime thorn in the side of the Lady Trojans going back to its days as Lake Providence High School, was held to just six points in the first quarter while Ferriday scored 26 points.

It wasn’t much better for the Lady Panthers (3-17, 0-9) in the second quarter as they were outscored by the Lady Trojans 17-2 to go into halftime down 43-8.

Zaniya Curry and Aaliyah Gray added eight points each while Jakayla Griggs and Tierra Spurs had seven points each for the Lady Trojans.

Ferriday (20-5, 7-2) plays at Vidalia High School on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m.

Ferriday boys 68, General Trass 39

FERRIDAY — Montrieze Sandage led all scorers with 21 points as the Ferriday High School Trojans cruised to a 68-39 win over the General Trass High School Panthers Friday night in LHSAA District 2-2A action.

Ferriday came out of the gate on fire in the first half and there was very little General Trass could do to slow down the Trojans. By the time the first quarter was over, the Trojans had a 23-9 lead. And when halftime arrived, the game was pretty much over with as the home team had a commanding 47-19 cushion.

The second half was more competitive, but the Panthers (4-16, 2-6) were unable to put any dent in Ferriday’s big halftime lead. Jalyric Brooks poured in 14 points for the Trojans.

Ferriday (11-13, 5-4) next plays at Vidalia High School at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29.

Block girls 48, Northwood-Lena 41

JONESVILLE — What was supposed to be a mismatch between Northwood-Lena High School and Block High School turned out to be just the opposite as the Lady Bears held on for a 48-41 win over the Lady Gators Friday night in an LHSAA District 3-1A game.

The Lady Bears picked up their 20th win of the season, but they had to earn it against a Lady Gators that was desperate for a much-needed win. Northwood-Lena (3-14, 1-8) led Block 11-10 at the end of the first quarter and it looked like there possibly could be an upset in the making.

However, Block ended any notion of that happening by outscoring Northwood-Lena 12-7 in the second quarter for a 22-18 halftime lead and 12-9 in the third quarter for a 34-27 advantage. Both teams scored 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Cintina Green led the Lady Bears with 16 points and ShirCold Bowman scored 15 points. Ayleyah Winn led the Lady Gators with 16 points while Liyah Perry had 12 points and Elondra Williams chipped in with 11 points.

Block (20-5, 6-2) next plays on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. at Montgomery High School.

Brookhaven High girls 52, Natchez High 12

BROOKHAVEN — Nearly everyone on Brookhaven High School’s roster not only played in the Lady Panthers’ 52-12 win over the Natchez High School Lady Bulldogs Friday night, but they also found their way into the scoring column in this lopsided MHSAA Region 6-5A game.

Silentianna Collins was the only player for either team to score in double figures as she led the Lady Panthers (21-1, 5-0) with 17 points while Ayanna Mcnairy had six points.

How bad was this game for the Lady Bulldogs? They didn’t score a single point in the first quarter and again in the third quarter. Kelsy McNeal led them in scoring with four points.

Natchez High (11-12, 1-2) is scheduled to travel to Jackson to take on Forest Hill High School on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. Lady Bulldogs head coach ShaRhonda Gipson said it may be moved back a day to Monday, Jan. 28, depending on the weather.

Brookhaven High boys 69, Natchez High 63

BROOKHAVEN — Lafollette Bogan led Brookhaven High School with a game-high 25 points and La’darius Thrasher had 14 points as the Panthers rallied for a 69-63 overtime win over the Natchez High School Bulldogs Friday night in MHSAA Region 6-5A action.

This game was close from the opening tip to the end of regulation. So much so that the first quarter ended in a 14-14 tie and both teams scored eight points in the second quarter to make it a 22-22 game at the half.

Natchez High outscored Brookhaven (17-5, 3-2) 14-12 in the third quarter for a 36-34 lead, but the Panthers answered by sending the game into overtime with a 21-19 edge in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs ran out of gas in overtime and were outscored by the Panthers 14-8.

Kedarius Stampley led the Bulldogs with 22 points and James Singleton had 16 points.

Natchez High plays at Forest Hill High School next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., unless it is moved back a day to Monday, Jan. 28 because of the weather.

Oak Hill girls 46, Monterey 24

HINESTON, La. — The Oak Hill High School Lady Rams pulled off a stunning upset Friday night, defeating the Monterey High School Lady Wolves 46-24 in what was Monterey’s LHSAA District 5-B opener.

Oak Hill entered the game with a losing overall record and was already 0-1 in district play. Yet the Lady Rams played like a team determined not to fall too far behind in the district standings against a Monterey team that had its originally-scheduled district opener earlier in the week at Grace Christian School postponed.

And that was never more evident than in the third quarter. Coming out of halftime with a 23-18 lead, the Lady Rams had their way with the Lady Wolves at both ends of the court and wound up with an astonishing 18-2 advantage for a 41-20 lead.

Peyton Townley led Oak Hill with a game-high 22 points. Andy Gray led the Lady Wolves in scoring with 11 points.

Monterey (17-6, 0-1) hosts Glenmora High School at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29.

Hazlehurst 55, Wilkinson 54

WOODVILLE — Wilkinson County High School battled back from a seven-point halftime deficit to force overtime, but the Hazlehurst High School Indians held on for a 55-54 win Friday night to remain undefeated in MHSAA Region 7-3A.

Hazlehurst (7-11, 5-0) took a 20-17 lead over Wilkinson County after one quarter of play and then the Indians outscored the Wildcats 13-9 in the second quarter for a 33-26 lead at intermission.

But the Wildcats responded in a big way as they outscored the Indians 23-16 to tie the game at 49-49. And then the seemingly improbable happened — neither team scored a single point in the fourth quarter. Not even a free throw. If either team had even made one of those, that team would have won the game.

Instead, Hazlehurst and Wilkinson County went into overtime with the game still tied at 49-all. The Indians prevailed with a 6-5 edge in the extra session.

Freddie Byrd III led the Wildcats with 18 points and Maliq Nehila had 16 points.

Wilkinson County (2-15, 1-4) hosts Franklin County High School for Senior Night on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m.

Hazlehurst girls 55, Wilkinson County 39

WOODVILLE — After a sluggish first quarter, Hazlehurst High School outscored Wilkinson County High School 38-11 over the next two quarters as the Lady Indians defeated the Lady Wildcats 55-39 Friday night in an MHSAA Region 7-3A game.

Hazlehurst (12-6, 5-0) played well defensively in the first quarter, holding Wilkinson County to seven points. Yet the Lady Indians’ offense sputtered at times during the opening eight minutes and they only put up 11 points.

The second and third quarters, however, were a completely different story as Hazlehurst put up 18 and 20 points, respectively. Its defense continued to make it difficult for Wilkinson County to get anything going offensively. The Lady Wildcats scored a mere four points in the second quarter and seven points in the third quarter to go down 49-18.

The Lady Wildcats made the final score a lot more respectable than it could have been with a 21-6 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Deointra Wyatt led the Lady Wildcats with 17 points while Chernecie Smith had seven points and Chelbie Dorsey finished with six points.

Wilkinson County (3-13, 1-4) plays host to Franklin County High School on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. and it will be Senior Night at WCHS.

Vidalia boys 66, Beekman Charter 33

BASTROP, La. — Jaquan Wilson led all scorers with 23 points as the Vidalia High School Vikings cruised to a 66-33 victory over the Beekman Charter School Tigers Friday night in an LHSAA District 2-2A game.

The Vikings dominated the Tigers on both ends of the court en route to a 23-5 by the end of the first quarter. Even though Beekman Charter (2-18, 0-9) outscored Vidalia 17-15 in the second quarter, the Vikings still went into halftime up 16 points, 38-22 and were never seriously threatened by the Tigers.

The third quarter was the icing on the cake for Vidalia as it outscored Beekman Charter 22-5 for a commanding 60-27 advantage.

DeMikal McCoy added 15 points and Brendan Smith chipped in with 10 points for the Vikings.

Vidalia (11-12, 4-4) will play host to district and parish rival Ferriday High School on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
