FERRIDAY — The Cathedral Green Wave made a late comeback Thursday night against the Delta Charter Storm to seal a win 12-11 in the last inning at Delta Charter field.

Cathedral started off the first inning with several hits batting around and ending the inning with a 5-0 lead.

Delta Charter slowly chipped away at that lead, with RBI hits from Trey Poole, Cole McGiveran, Drew Brown and Jarrod Barron by the end of the fifth inning the Storm had stormed back to tie the ballgame 5-5.

The bottom of the sixth inning had everything go Delta Charter’s way. The Storm loaded the bases on three different occasions in the inning with a series of walks, errors and a passed ball and clawed their way to the lead this time 11-6 as they were sent out into the field for the seventh inning to defend their lead.

However, the Cathedral top half of the inning started out almost exactly the same as Delta Charter’s previous at bat; Cathedral enjoyed three walks, a hit batter and a passed ball to get their opportunity to score runs off of three bases loaded situations.

They took advantage of it and were able to score six runs to take back the lead they had held for the previous five and a half innings.

The game was now a one-run game 12-11 going into the bottom of the last inning. With one out in the inning and a man on first, Coach Craig Beesley made a gut decision; he sent Jake Hairston to the pitcher’s mound. It proved to be the right move.

The next batter up hit a line drive deep shot to centerfield, it was caught for out number two. The next batter up hit a hard bouncing ball to short and with a scoop and a long throw over to first base in time the game was over with Cathedral winning an exciting game 12-11.

“I am really proud of Jake Hairston coming in late and getting us out of a jam,” Beesley said. “He had to face their number 3 and 4 hitters and got the win.”

Beesley said that Noah Russ did a good job for the team in left field and made two good defensive plays.

“Hollis Lees gave us a good effort also over at first base,” Beesley said. 

The winning pitcher was Hairston. Cathedral plays a double-header today against Natchez High at Chester Willis Field starting at 5 p.m.
