VIDALIA — Tristan Weatherly held Cathedral High School to just three hits on the mound and was just as effective at the plate as the Vidalia High School Vikings defeated the Green Wave 13-2 in five innings Friday night at the Miss-Lou Invitational at the Concordia Recreation District 3 Complex — Cliff Merritt Memorial Field.

“It was a good bounce back for us after losing to ACCS (Thursday night),” Vikings head coach Michael Norris said. “We did the little things right tonight.”

Weatherly allowed two runs, one earned, struck out four and walked three. He also went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. And he had Cathedral batters baffled throughout his five innings of work.

“He did a good job of changing speeds on us,” Green Wave head coach Craig Beesley said. “We were hoping to get runners on with certain hitters coming up, but we weren’t able to get the runners on base early in the innings.”

Vidalia scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning of starting pitcher Conner Murray, who was charged with the loss despite going just one-third of an inning. He gave up one earned run, walked two, hit one batter and struck out one. He was the first of four pitchers used during the game — and none of them were very effective.

Noah Russ allowed six runs, three of them earned, on just one hit but with four walks and just one strikeout in two innings. Mason Moore also lasted just one-third of an inning and allowed three runs, none earned, on two hits and one walk. Ben Foster pitched an inning and a third and gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits with one strikeout. Cathedral also committed six errors.

“We just didn’t play very well. We didn’t throw strikes and we didn’t play good defense,” Beesley said.

And those two things were what really hurt the Green Wave in the bottom of the third inning when the Vikings scored nine runs to take an 11-0 lead. Cathedral finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning, but Vidalia responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 13-1 advantage.

“Tristan was pitching to contact, locating well. It was a Tristan Weatherly-type of performance,” Norris said. “He’s a senior. He’s a leader.”

The Green Wave’s last chance to extend the game didn’t go very well as they scored just one run in the top of the fifth inning.

Ben White went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored for the Green Wave. CJ Chatman was 2-for-3 with one RBI while Tony Tolliver was 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored for the Vikings.

“CJ Chatman stood out at the plate tonight. He had another good night for us. We moved him up in the lineup,” Norris said.

Cathedral (4-4) begins MAIS District 5-AAA play on Monday, March 18 at Central Private School at 6:30 p.m. Vidalia (6-4) wraps up play at the Miss-Lou Invitational today when it faces off with Southside High School today at 6 p.m.

Monterey 11, St. Joseph’s-Plaucheville 4

MONTEREY — The Monterey High School Wolves got back on the winning track with an 11-4 victory over the St. Joseph’s High School-Plaucheville Eagles Friday afternoon.

J.J. Farris was the winning pitcher for Monterey. At the plate, Hayden Arcemont had a triple and Conner Boyd had a double for the Wolves.

Monterey (4-3) will play host to Harrisonburg High School on Monday, March 18 at 5:30 p.m.

Avoyelles Public Charter 12, Monterey 9 (Thurs.)

MANSURA, La. — The Avoyelles Public Charter School Vikings rallied in the latter innings to defeat the Monterey High School Wolves 12-9 Thursday afternoon.

Monterey seemed to be in control of the game with an 8-5 lead after three and a half innings. But Avoyelles Charter would have other ideas. The Vikings started their comeback with what appeared to be one harmless run in the bottom of the fourth to make it an 8-6 game.

However, that run seemed to galvanize Avoyelles Charter as the Vikings scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and just like that the score was tied 8-8. And by then the Wolves knew the momentum had been taken away from them.

After Monterey was held scoreless in the top of the sixth inning, Avoyelles Charter took the lead with a four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 12-8. Monterey tried to make a comeback of its own in the top of the seventh, but could only bring in one run.

Luke Rousseau was the winning pitcher for Avoyelles Charter. Jacob Spinks was charged with the loss for Monterey.

The Wolves were led at the plate by Ethan Clark and Mason Wells, who each went 2-for-4 with a double, and Ethan Heard, who was 2-for-3.
