Prep softball round up: Lady Vikings fall to Hornets 10-8 Friday

SULPHUR, La. — In perhaps the most bizarre game of the day at the Sulphur High School Tournament, the Grand Lake High School Lady Hornets from Lake Charles, La. held on for a 10-8 win over the Vidalia High School Lady Vikings Friday afternoon at Pattison Park.

That’s because not a single one of Grand Lake’s runs were earned. The reason for that? Vidalia committed eight errors, over half of which led to the Lady Hornets’ scoring output. And the Lady Hornets did all of their scoring in the first three innings.

“That was the difference in today’s game,” Lady Vikings head coach Forrest Foster said. “In the situation where we made an error, if we would’ve gotten that batter out, none of those runs would’ve scored.”

An error led to the Lady Hornets’ only run in the top of the first inning. After the Lady Vikings tied the game in the bottom of the first, Grand Lake struck for four runs in the top of the second. After the Lady Hornets loaded the bases with two outs, the Lady Vikings committed an error that proved to be costly.

Then in the top of the third, two Vidalia errors led to five runs for Grand Lake, giving the Lady Hornets a 10-1 lead. Mia Daigle went 2-for-4 and Laney Hampton was 2-for-5 to lead Grand Lake at the plate.

The Lady Vikings didn’t go away quietly, however, as they scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to just three runs.

However, winning pitcher Jordyn Stickell settled down and gave up just one run in the bottom of the seventh. Stickell went the distance and allowed eight runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

Sara Cockerham took the loss after allowing 10 runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks in seven innings. She did all she could to get Vidalia a chance to get back in the game by throwing four straight scoreless innings.

“Every run but one we had were earned,” Foster said.

The Lady Vikings were led at the plate by Shelbi Cross, who went 4-for-4 with two doubles and a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Macie Seyfart went 3-for-4 while Cayley Weatherly was 2-for-3 with a triple and Alyssa Cupstid was 2-for-4 with a double.

Vidalia (3-6) has two games at the Sulphur Tournament today, first against Vinton High School at 8:30 a.m. and then against DeQuincy High School at 4:30 p.m.
